[Ghost School, Seemab Gul, Pakistani cinema, film censorship, education in Pakistan, independent cinema] by @cinelava_films

A filmmaker has to fight many battles through production but one battle I never thought I’d fight is at the Sindh High Court (SHC), where we contested the ban of my feature film GHOST SCHOOL. A film needs to go through at least 3 separate censorship boards to have it seen in different provinces in Pakistan. While the Federal censor board and the Punjab censor board passed the film, Sindh banned Ghost School. (Could it be because there are tens of thousands of real abandoned ghost schools in Sindh and millions of children can’t go to school in Sindh?!)

They originally refused the certificate by just saying “not suitable for public viewing.” The SHC directed the Sindh censor board to watch the film again and give a reason for the ban as per their own rules. But after second viewing (for which I had to hire a cinema for them again), they offered the certificate by suggesting silly cuts of words that they considered offensive but are not actually offensive. And they wanted the climatic school scene edited, which is critical for the story. So we took them back to court and this time SHC ruled that the board failed to justify their cuts. The sympathetic judges have ordered the Sindh censor board to reconsider the certificate within ten days with an appropriate rating :)
Many thanks to lawyer Moiz Baig for your support.

GHOST SCHOOL is now being released in cinemas across Pakistan including Karachi on 30th October! 🙌🏽🎉
