Cinema Ras is a film programming and curatorial initiative dedicated to using cinema to see ourselves and explore the ways we can exist in this world.

The name comes from a variety store that once stood at Queen and Parliment from 2007 to 2021. As a kid, I watched most blockbuster films through bootleg CDs I got there. Many were low-quality recordings made inside cinemas, with shadows of people moving across the screen.

Cinema Ras builds on that experience by creating accessible spaces for people to come together and watch films. We’ll host many free film screenings all summer long. It’s about moving people through moving pictures. #2026 #movies by @cinema.ras

Thank you for coming to our screening of Drylongso(1998) with @shoeboxphoenix ❤️

We captured our audience on Polaroid because the main character of the film Drylongso, Pica, uses Polaroids to preserve the memory of her fading community. We wanted to build on that theme and bring that aspect of the film to life. Shot by the brilliant @lxberih 🤲🏽

We hope to see you all at our next free screening this Monday, July 13th at Maloca Community Garden!
