When literary arts and visual arts meet, something beautiful happens.

Raipur Readers Club @raipurreadersclub and Cinema & Beyond came together for a conversation around Jhumpa Lahiri’s The Namesake and Mira Nair’s adaptation of the story.

From books to cinema, we spoke about identity, migration, names, perspectives, and the many ways a story can live through different art forms.

We discussed Lahiri's writing, her life journey as a diaspora kid, and how it inspired the moving story of Ashok, Ashima and Gogol Ganguly.

And we also delved into the art of Mira Nair, how she borrowed from the source material and turned it into a beautiful slow-burn love story.

It was lovely meeting new people, hearing different perspectives, and sharing an afternoon around a story we all connected with.

Here’s to more books, more films, and more conversations together.

What does dissent in cinema, poetry and art really mean? 🎬

Can memes also be a medium of dissent, like stand-up comedy?

Everyone sees it differently, and that’s what makes the conversation worth having.

From our session on Cinema of Dissent, here are some voices of our community members sharing their thoughts, perspectives, and interpretations of what dissent in cinema means to them.

Let’s hear it from the people themselves. 👀

Hello to another वीक of the internet waking up to the brilliance of Hindi film songs.
I remember loving the fusion of this Vishnu stuti (विष्णु स्तुति) and Sufi qawwali for Bajirao Mastani’s Aaj Ibaadat.
I listened to this sound of prayers and qawwali (प्रार्थना और क़व्वाली) on loop.
Aaj Ibaadat is a mesmerising coming together of love from two different faiths and taking it to the highest form i.e. devotion (भक्ति / इबादत), like a prayer to one’s mehboob.
Instagram creators are giving it a beautiful turn by making edits on different interfaith(Hindu-Muslim) couples portrayed on screen.
Swipe to see some of the memorable ones
 🧡💚

Song- Aaj Ibadat
Vocals - Javed Bashir
Lyrics- A. M. Turaj
Music- Sanjay Leela Bhansali

Mahatma Gandhi is a synonym for satya and ahimsa. His ideology transcends borders leaving a lasting impression on nations and cultures, inspiring global movements and the fight against injustice.
Filmmakers across the generations and mediums have tried to capture his life and ideals on screen.

Here’s a list of 12 portrayals to commemorate Gandhi’s birth anniversary.

Today, we collaborated with Cinema & Beyond for a wonderful afternoon of stories, cinema, and conversation around The Namesake — the novel by Jhumpa Lahiri and the film adaptation by Mira Nair. 🎬📖

From diaspora, immigration and migration to language, identity and the significance of names, our discussion took us far beyond the pages of the book and the frames of the film.

We spoke about the director’s perspective, the choices that shape a film, and one thought that stayed with us — perhaps a film should not simply be called “based on” a book, but rather “inspired by” it, because cinema is its own interpretation, its own language, and its own creative world.

Most importantly, it was lovely meeting everyone and hearing so many different perspectives. Some books end when you turn the last page; the best ones continue in conversations like these. 🤍

Thank you, Cinema & Beyond, and everyone who joined us for this beautiful discussion.

Until the next book, the next film, and the next conversation. ✨ taken in Raipur by @cinemaandbeyond

From pages to screen.

How Irrfan Khan and Tabu immortalised Jhumpa Lahiri’s Ashoke and Ashima in Mira Nair’s adaptation of The Namesake.

Lahiri gave us Ashoke and Ashima through words, their silences, memories, longing and quiet resilience.
Nair gave them a physical world, and Irrfan and Tabu gave that world a pulse.

The way Ashoke walks away.
The way the screen slowly fades.
The silences that linger long after the frame disappears.

These are moments unique to cinema, adding another layer to what Lahiri had already created on the page.

And perhaps that’s why, when it comes to The Namesake — the novel versus the film, there is no winner.

It’s a tie.

We are discussing both the novel and the movie with @raipurreadersclub.
