Riding the nostalgia train back to the late 00’s where I was involved in the music scene directing videos and stuff. It seems like there is a nod to that era with some new vids and music coming out, and the @indysleaze page. So I thought I’d take a look back at some bits for old times sake. It was nice to be part of something before phones, before culture got flattened out a bit, and there was still the dregs of subcultures around. I guess subcultures still exist, do they?
This was my first ever music video for Best Fwends, 2007, done for £500 for Stephen Bass aka @prahrecordings at @moshimoshimusic . They came over from Texas, I was overwhelmed by their coolness, I didn’t know what lighting was let alone how to light someone, I still don’t tbh. We did it in my friends bedroom in Hackney Wick, thanks damo! Stephen was a great part of my early music video career, thanks Stephen!

Bathroom Gurgle video for @lotpofficial , my second video, shot in a small theatre in Bethnal Green. Again totally overwhelmed by their amazingness. The art director did a great job with all the glass for the background. Art directors must’ve hated me!

One of the early @metronomy videos , I’ve done a few with metronomy, grateful to the boys for that. Great to see them still doing their thing. We bought the car in an auto trader mag I think and drove it down to where joe is from in Devon. That’s the house he grew up in. We shot on 16mm, with the great @cinemaeyes and the vid had a road trip theme around Torquay and Dartmoor.

@colhenderson my partner in crime was a big part of this one, we were looking at obscure Italian disco tv shows and wanted it to be a disco set in a different, unknown place. Using old tv cameras to get that video-ey look.

This was the cover of Shitdisco’s album that we made in my mate Damo’s bedroom in Hackney Wick, with the help @alistairtayloryoung It was a mission to connect up all the fluo tubes and get them plugged in. And who knows how Alistair got the camera up that high. Analog 4eva.

Before @matineeidle dropped out to work on small, obscure indie movies like @disclosureday he was with us on MAMMALS where he played the son of a tech billionaire and @meliakreiling ‘s boyfriend. A tricky part but Henry played it with ease and imbued it with humanity so you couldn’t help but empathise with him in the end.

I have worked with @barneyd101 as my A-Camera Operator on a number of occasions. I always find working with him such a joy - his framing, skill set, understanding of what the scene is about and his passion for the work makes him, in my mind, one of the UK’s top Camera Operators. More importantly, he’s a brilliant human being and a dear friend.

This was the first time I got to work with @greencameralizzard , but she came very highly recommended by many Cinematographers and I soon realised why. Julia’s a highly skilled Operator, with a fantastic eye for a frame and brilliant presence on set. She’s absolutely amazing to work with and another wonderful human being.

Together they made my job so much easier, knowing I could always trust them to get, the sometimes very complicated, shots me and @robingwright had designed. Often in very challenging locations and conditions.

Their work really helped to elevate the Cinematography and the storytelling of THE GIRLFRIEND and I’m so happy and proud that their work has been recognised by their peers and nominated for the ACO TV Drama Award.

The conversation focuses on building a two-perspective visual structure, establishing the show’s core visual language in Episodes 1–3, and maintaining continuity across the series. Nyberg and Morris also break down their approach to camera and lens selection, aspect ratios, filtration, and the technical challenges of shooting demanding locations, including an indoor pool house and open-water sequences.
