Physical Media is the Last Frontier of Cinema📀
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Welcome to Cinema Parasite 🎞️✨

Today, in the era of streaming and fragmented perception, we’ve lost the ability to truly value what we have. For just a few dollars, without any effort, we can watch more films in a single month than people could see in a lifetime just decades ago. Our attention is scattered, the content multiplies faster than nuclear fission, and every frame fights for a second of our focus.

We watch a movie while scrolling through social media. A few hours later, we barely remember what we saw. We often find ourselves dissatisfied—not because the film was bad, but because we’ve forgotten how to stop, focus, and truly observe.

Physical media changes that.
It forces us to slow down. To hold the disc in our hands, to study the artwork, to read the booklet, and to discover the layers of a film through supplemental materials. It allows us to linger with a movie. To be alone with it just a little longer.

Cinema Parasite
is a curated space dedicated to the tangible side of cinema. It is for those who believe that film is a living object of art. Like any masterpiece, it invites us to a conversation—one that happens through touching the grain of the paper, collecting the history, and simply learning how to observe again.

What to expect here:
◽️ Boutique Unboxings: Deep dives into releases from specialty labels like Arrow Video, Radiance Films, Indicator, Criterion Collection, BFI, Second Sight, Curzon, Eurika, 88 films, 101 films, Second Run, Vinegar Syndrome, Studio Canal, Deaf Crocodile, Kino Lorber, Severin, and many others.
◽️ Visual Narratives: Exploring how stories are told through the lens — from cinematography and scene analysis to the historical context and fascinating trivia behind each film.
◽️ The Art of Observation: A space to slow down and appreciate the aesthetic beauty of cinema, focusing on the craftsmanship of 4K restorations and high-quality transfers.

Thank you for being here. Let’s stay with the film just a little longer.

Keep the physical media alive.

Cinema, like any other art form, is constantly in conversation with its own past. It’s almost impossible to imagine the films we watch today without the films that came before them.

Intertextuality, homage, references, inspiration... even outright copying. Different intentions, different approaches, but all of them, in one way or another, keep the past alive. Old images find new meaning, familiar ideas take on new forms, and something once created gets another chance to live.

*Army of Darkness* is a wonderful example of this. Sam Raimi draws from decades of cinema - from the slapstick of The Three Stooges and Ray Harryhausen’s skeletons to classic fantasy adventures and science fiction - and transforms those influences into something unmistakably his own.

There’s an old idea that people never truly die as long as someone remembers them. As long as even one person carries their memory, some part of them remains alive.

Maybe cinema works the same way.

Every time one film remembers another, a piece of the past lives on. And as long as cinema keeps remembering itself, it will never truly die.

This is one of those strange cases where a scene from one film instantly makes you think of another, and in your memory, the two almost seem shot-for-shot identical.

Of course, they aren’t. But the rhythm, atmosphere, and visual logic of the two sieges are remarkably close. Archers on the walls, ladders rising against the fortress, stones and projectiles raining down, battering rams at the gate, defenders fighting against impossible numbers, even some of the camera angles and staging feel uncannily familiar. Critics and fans have been pointing out these similarities for years, especially around Helm’s Deep.

And yes, a medieval siege naturally comes with a certain vocabulary. If you’re attacking a fortress, there are only so many tools available. But the similarities go beyond props and tactics. Both battles build toward the same old cinematic rescue mechanism: when everything seems lost, cavalry appears and turns the tide. Griffith was already using this kind of last-minute mounted rescue in the silent era, long before fantasy cinema adopted it as one of its favorite dramatic devices.

Then there is one small meta-detail I love. Sam Raimi hides himself inside Army of Darkness, while his brother Ted appears in several roles throughout the film. Peter Jackson does the same kind of thing in The Two Towers, during Helm’s Deep, he briefly appears on the battlements throwing a spear at the Uruk-hai. The Numbers

Jackson’s battle is obviously operating on a completely different scale, more elaborate, more dramatic, and built on Tolkien’s much deeper mythology. But watching these scenes together, it is hard not to feel as if the Necronomicon had somehow found its way into Middle-earth.

On the surface, science fiction of the 1960s was everywhere - spacious, props-heavy control rooms, colorful jumpsuits, and predictable space tropes. Even when horror crept into orbit, like in It! The Terror from Beyond Space, it was usually just a monster-on-the-loose setup.

What truly links Mario Bava’s Planet of the Vampires to Ridley Scott’s Alien isn’t just the familiar setup of a crew drawn toward a mysterious signal on an unknown planet. It’s the visual mythology: the eerie, claustrophobic atmosphere, the sense of cosmic dread lurking beyond the characters’ understanding, and environments that speak louder than the characters ever could.

The connection is even physical: legendary FX master Carlo Rambaldi created the giant humanoid skeleton models for Planet of the Vampires. Fourteen years later, Rambaldi joined Ridley Scott’s Alien team to design the complex animatronics inside the Xenomorph’s head (and would later create E.T.).

Long before the Nostromo set course, Bava built the visual blueprint for cinematic space terror out of pure shadow, smoke, and imagination.

The aviator shades, the toothpick in the mouth, the night-slick streets of Los Angeles, and the legendary scorpion jacket echoing the cobra iconography. While Marion Cobretti and the Driver are fundamentally different anti-heroes, the visual DNA connecting George P. Cosmatos’ cult classic to Nicolas Winding Refn’s modern masterpiece is hard to ignore.

Coincidence or a subtle nod? Consider this: the pizzeria featured in Drive is located right on Balboa Blvd in Los Angeles. A potential homage to Stallone’s legacy, or just a cinematic echo across decades?

Both Dark City’s Strangers and The Matrix’s Machines share a collective intelligence — much like the Hive-Mind in Peter Watts’ Blindsight. Seeking to control us, they created Dark City: a raw, manual sandbox protocol to test human consciousness.

But complex systems always generate the anomaly that breaks them. The prototype glitched, creating John Murdoch — a dangerous mix of chaos, emotion, and systemic control capable of rewriting the core.

To prevent another Murdoch, the creators automated the system, birthing The Matrix. They split his dangerous wholeness into a quarantine system: the Architect (logic) and the Oracle (intuition). Now, Neo is just a controlled anomaly, a cyclical attempt to safely repeat the Murdoch phenomenon. Yet, the machines still fail to predict human emotion, forcing a push toward a post-human fusion.

The Postmodern Dialogue: Releasing a year apart, both films captured the late-90s zeitgeist — anxieties over the millennium and computerization. It’s a brilliant postmodern coincidence: two films sharing the exact same thematic DNA, talking without knowing it. The Matrix just pushed these ideas into a deeper philosophical territory.

The Meta-Layer: The Matrix was filmed in the exact same set locations in Australia left behind by Dark City. The simulation literally built itself inside the ruins of its own prototype.

What if the phone call Neo answered in his corporate office wasn’t from Morpheus? What if Dark City and The Matrix share a much closer connection than you think?

Listen closely to Dr. Schreber’s warnings. The paranoid, shifting world of Proyas’ masterpiece feels like the immediate psychological predecessor to the Wachowskis’ simulation. A raw, unautomated prototype where the creators are still frantically trying to understand the human mind.

Marty Supreme (2025) | When the Story is Told by Faces

Josh Safdie has always been obsessed with getting inside the head of his characters. In Marty Supreme, this obsession reaches a new level of intimacy.

As cinematographer Darius Khondji notes, the film was shot with classic anamorphic lenses and extremely long focal lengths — even more so than in Uncut Gems. The result is a visual language where the story is told by faces. We are literally right there, witnessing every twitch, every micro-reaction, and every breath.

The Safdies’ signature is this relentless focus on human behavior. They don’t just film actors; they capture the raw, kinetic energy of a character’s internal drive. By coupling a vintage, painterly aesthetic with a modern, frantic pace, the film achieves a unique strength — a period piece that feels timeless and visceral.

Fun fact: The music in this reel is Tangerine Dream’s “Love on a Real Train.” While not in the film itself, the influence of their Risky Business score is unmistakable. Daniel Lopatin (@eccopn) clearly channels that iconic synth-driven atmosphere, mirroring Safdie’s own nods to the era. Just go back and listen to the Marty Supreme soundtrack again.
