It's Cinemassacre's Monster Madness XX: Trick or Treat! This year I'm covering movies that take place on Halloween.

Haunt Season (2024) is a recent slasher from director Jake Jarvi. A masked killer starts murdering the cast of a Halloween haunt attraction, turning their staged fake injuries into the real thing and building toward a Halloween night massacre. It's a low-budget indie that leans hard into the haunt-season vibe.

Love the Monster Madness XX art? Same. Here’s how Unlovely Frankenstein made it:

“First up is a 1950 newspaper ad for the spook show ‘Den of Living Nightmares,’ which provided much of the ‘head’ for the ghoul. The body was a modified version of the skeleton from the 1957 movie ‘The Undead,’ which I used as an homage to the Misfits 1982 album, ‘Evilive.’

“You can see the evolution of these ideas in the attached sketches, which shows a mostly unmodified head for the ghoul. I wound up removing the monocle and adding some ‘hypno eyes,’ drawing a new cape collar, etc.

“As for the ‘movie roster’ image that's attached, I don't remember where I was going with this one? It used a lot of imagery from public domain horror comics.

“The font used for the MONSTER MADNESS title is a purchased font called, appropriately enough, ‘PM Spook Show.’”

Thanks to Unlovely Frankenstein for both the art and the breakdown. Be sure to grab our newly restocked merch on Retroware’s site. by @cinemassacre

It's Cinemassacre's Monster Madness XX: Trick or Treat! This year I'm covering movies that take place on Halloween.

Night of the Demons (1988) is a cult 80s favorite from director Kevin Tenney. A group of teenagers throw a Halloween party at Hull House, an abandoned funeral home, and hold a séance that wakes up a demon. One by one, the partygoers get possessed.

It's loaded with practical effects, scream queen Linnea Quigley, and Halloween atmosphere.

The crew and I headed deep into Texas to visit the REAL locations from The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974).

We visited the gas station, Bagdad Cemetery, the original location of the Sawyer house, and the actual house that was moved to Kingsland and turned into Hooper’s Restaurant.

Along the way, I matched shots from the movie, dug into the history of each location, and tracked down some of the lesser-known details behind one of the most iconic horror movies ever made. by @cinemassacre

It's Cinemassacre's Monster Madness XX: Trick or Treat! (That's XX for 20 years!)

This year I'm covering movies that take place on Halloween, and I'm kicking things off with one of the most brutal series in modern horror.

Terrifier (2016) follows Art the Clown as he stalks his victims through Miles County on Halloween night, butchering anyone who gets in his way.

Terrifier 2 (2022) picks up a year later, with Art resurrected by a sinister entity and hunting teenager Sienna and her younger brother on Halloween.

Director Damien Leone made these on tiny budgets, and Terrifier 2 became infamous for reports of people fainting and throwing up in theaters.

Here's what I thought. by @cinemassacre

In 2008, the AVGN and Nostalgia Critic went to war. The battle came to a head at Digital Press Video Games, with Captain S caught in the crossfire. The REAL story just went up on YouTube in an hour-long documentary. by @cinemassacre
