Whalefall is entertaining for what it is, but I walked away wishing there had been more to the story. A man getting swallowed by a sperm whale is certainly enough to grab your attention, and there’s an emotional foundation in his struggle with the guilt surrounding his father’s suicide. However, beyond those two elements, the film doesn’t feel like it has much else to offer. It holds your interest, but the story never develops into something as compelling as its premise suggests.

The survival aspect works well enough to keep things moving. There’s an immediate reason to care about whether this character makes it out alive, and the bizarre situation gives the film a certain appeal. Still, as it goes on, I found myself wanting more than the next obstacle in his fight to escape. His grief gives the experience some weight, but I wanted the film to explore that relationship and its emotional consequences more deeply.

Austin Abrams and Josh Brolin are ultimately what save it. Abrams carries a demanding role and gives you enough to stay invested in his character, while Brolin brings weight to the father-son relationship. Their performances help the emotional material land, even when the writing doesn’t feel quite strong enough to support it. There are a couple of scenes where the acting feels noticeably off, which briefly takes you out of the experience, but overall, their work is the strongest part of the film.

I wouldn’t say I disliked Whalefall. I was entertained, and the performances gave me a reason to stick with it. I just wish there had been a fuller story behind the spectacle and a stronger emotional payoff. It’s an interesting premise with two capable leads, but the finished film left me feeling there was more it could have done.

6/10

Nicolas Cage said, “I think I might do a season of True Detective,” then joked about being the first to announce it.
Although HBO has not officially confirmed this, it would be great to see Nic Cage back in a TV series.

Matthew McConaughey lost 47 lbs in just four months to play Ron Woodroof.

Makeup was said to only have had a budget of $250, and they still ended up winning an Oscar for it.

Aaron Sorkin’s The Social Reckoning tackles an incredibly important subject: Facebook’s role in radicalizing people and the consequences of giving a platform that much influence over our lives. There is a story here worth telling, and its relevance is undeniable. Unfortunately, the importance of its subject matter doesn’t make the film itself compelling enough.

The performances are among its strongest qualities, especially Mikey Madison, who stands out even when the film around her falls short. Jeremy Allen White also delivers a strong performance. The cast gives the material weight, but strong acting can only carry a film so far. I wanted to be more invested, particularly given the seriousness of what it explores, yet it never came together for me.

My biggest issue is its connection to The Social Network, which I consider one of the most outstanding films of the century. Whether described as a sequel or a companion piece, The Social Reckoning invites a comparison it cannot live up to. It lacks the same dramatic pull and leaves me questioning what this follow-up adds to the original’s legacy.

Ultimately, this feels like an unnecessary sequel. Its subject deserves attention, and the performances deserve recognition, but I don’t think the finished film justifies its existence in this form. At the very least, it should have stood on its own, without being marketed through its connection to such an exceptional predecessor.

Tom Cruise delivers a stellar performance in Digger, but I had a difficult time following the film itself. Directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu, the film brings together an impressive cast, including Sandra Hüller, Jesse Plemons, Riz Ahmed, John Goodman, Michael Stuhlbarg, Emma D’Arcy, Sophie Wilde, Burn Gorman, and Robert John Burke. There’s plenty of talent here, but the story left me feeling lost for much of the experience.

Cruise was easily the highlight for me, and the most impressive moment was his monologue. It was the scene that held my attention the most and gave me the strongest appreciation for his performance. Whatever difficulties I had with the story, that moment stood out. His delivery and commitment made it memorable, and I wish I had felt that same level of engagement throughout the rest of the film.

My biggest issue was understanding what the story was building toward. I kept trying to piece everything together, but I rarely felt like I had a firm grasp on where it was going. That made it difficult to become invested in the characters or feel the weight of what was happening. I spent more time trying to follow the narrative than actually connecting with it.

I enjoy films that challenge me and leave room for interpretation, but here I struggled to find enough clarity to stay involved. Even as the film progressed, I was still waiting for things to come into focus. By the end, that feeling of being lost had overshadowed much of what I appreciated.

Ultimately, Digger didn’t come together for me. Cruise’s performance, particularly his monologue, deserves recognition and gave me the film’s most memorable moment. But a strong lead performance couldn’t overcome a story I had trouble following almost all the way through. I left impressed by Cruise, but disappointed with the overall experience.

Overall, a 4.5/10 for me
