Cinema Year Zero is excited to announce that we are partnering with Cinema Rediscovered Festival 2026.

The festival, which takes place in Bristol from Wednesday 22nd to Sunday 26th July, focuses on reviving restored and forgotten films from the history of cinema. It is Britain’s leading hub for repertory cinema, which has endured over the last decade through its dedicated audience focus.

From us, you can expect a new essay for each day of the festival on a film in the programme. These will be available on our website, and in print at Watershed.

Friday 24th July: we host Les Sièges de l’Alcazar post-screening discussion of the film’s depiction of the pratfalls of cinephilia at Watershed café/bar

Across the weekend we will also host a Critics Salon, featuring readings from the commissioned essayists along with conversation about our critical practices. Free to attend, with more details to follow.

Our full newsletter announcement, featuring 10 highlights from the festival, is out now at cinemayearzero[dot]com

Cinema Year ‘26, our monthly review supplement, continues. In September, we found the very limits of cinema with a fantastical documentary, a cinephile’s stage production, an American comic in Sirk-land, a Spanish auteur-miniseries, and efforts to survive the latest video game adaptation.

Today, Cinema Year Zero presents a review of Erika Balsom’s The Edges of Cinema: Essays on Twenty-First Century Film Culture, out now via @columbiauniversitypress

Read it now at cinemayearzero[dot]com or comment 📖 for the link!

"Balsom says in the book’s coda that it is the closest she will ever get to autobiography. Fittingly, the contents page reads like a statement of research interests for an academic, a skin Balsom is sometimes reluctant to shed."

New online: “Just a Horrible Phase”: On Pumpkin and Inter-ability

“Pumpkin (2002) is the film in question, boasting a producer credit from Andrea Sperling (But I’m a Cheerleader, 1999) and an executive producer credit from Francis Ford Coppola. Co-directors Anthony Abrams and Adam Larson Broder share just three directing/writing credits , and it is by a vast margin the most enduring of the bunch. This strange mix of personalities behind the camera is a solid gauge of how off-the-rails this 2002 time capsule becomes, but the reason it’s gained cult status is instantly clear; this film wields a satirical blade so serrated that it often commits the exact social violations it intends to critique.”

We hadn’t come across 2002’s Pumpkin before Tyler Thier approached us about today’s essay. We’re happy he did, because it’s a great piece, but having watched the film, we are left somewhat frightened by the cultural detritus of the 2000s. If a film as morally contradictory as Pumpkin has been half-forgotten, what other horrors are out there waiting to be uncovered?

Tyler is a critic and scholar based in NYC. He is currently working on his first book.

NOT BY LYNCH returns on Friday 4 September at @the_cinema_museum
, with David Robert Mitchell’s Under the Silver Lake (2018).

A labyrinthine neo-noir of conspiracy, codes, pop culture and paranoia, following an aimless young man through the hidden passageways of Los Angeles in search of a woman who has mysteriously disappeared.

The screening will be introduced and accompanied by a new programme note by critic and Cinema Year Zero managing editor, @manlikeflan . booklet available exclusively on the night designed by @jj_designed.

Curated by @hairyabao
Presented in collaboration with @cinemayearzero

About UNDER THE SILVER LAKE

When Sam (Andrew Garfield) meets a mysterious neighbour by his apartment pool, only for her to vanish the following day, his search sends him spiralling through an increasingly strange Los Angeles. Songs conceal secret messages, maps become codes, urban legends acquire the force of reality, and seemingly trivial fragments of popular culture begin to suggest the presence of an enormous conspiracy beneath the surface of everyday life.

Following It Follows, David Robert Mitchell turns the familiar terrain of the Los Angeles noir into something sprawling, comic and deeply uncanny: a city saturated with movies, music, advertising and obsolete cultural debris, in which the desire to discover what everything “means” becomes its own form of madness.

Produced long after "Lynchian" had entered our cultural vocabulary, Under the Silver Lake approaches the other side of the season’s central question. Its Los Angeles inevitably recalls Mulholland Dr. and Lost Highway: seductive and threatening, familiar and unreal, its ordinary surfaces forever threatening to reveal another world underneath. But Mitchell transforms these affinities into something distinctly contemporary — a paranoid vision of life inside an endless maze of images, signs and stories.
