Friction — “Bad Timing”

the record’s been out for a few days now. i feel insane anytime i remember. i spent two years lying online that my band broke up. why? bc i thought it was funny. i’ll try to keep this short.

a lot of bad timing was written in 2023, drunken in the sweaty summer of arizona. it wasn’t until ronnie sent me a demo of what would become the opening track that i realized i was writing an album. i was in the midst of recovering from the deepest pain of my life and put a lot of that into this record. it’s an album of highs and lows, hype and loss, etc.

in december 2023 i was going to retire from music (again, lol) until i had a very vivid dream telling me that would be the biggest mistake of my life. thankfully i studied jung in college and realized the potency of that dream.

the story of the record is long and even more(?) self indulgent than this. if you’d ever like to hear it give me a call and i’ll tell you everything. or maybe we’ll finish the documentary. i’m not sure.

thank you to my band both current and former for their contributions and endless patience as i spent over a years time agonizing over this mess. ronnie, joey, joshua, ethan, and sofia; i know i’m incredibly difficult to work with. thank you to christian for his beautiful photographs; your work defined the sound. thank you to lucas and hayden for lending us their priceless gear for free. it elevated the sound of the record beyond words. thank you to october for keeping my head on straight during the entire process. thank you to marco and tony for being my family away from home and giving me a home in the most turbulent period of my life. thank you to nicolas roeg and the other filmmakers who inspired this work. thank you to You, for still giving a fuck, and above all else thank you to colin. i can’t put into words what your work and friendship means to me and i’m about to drive over to you after i post this so it’d be even weirder if i wrote an essay about it, but i love you.
