La Kunsthalle Lissabon presenta “La Chantin”, la primera exposición individual en Portugal del artista panameño Cisco Merel. 🏝️The title of the exhibition, “La Chantin,” draws on Panamanian slang used to refer to the house or home. However, its origin reveals a history of resilience and movement: the word derives from the English shanty. The term traveled with the Afro-Antillean diaspora during the construction of the Panama Canal, giving name to an architecture born out of urgency and resistance. In this exhibition, Cisco Merel reclaims these popular architectural forms to reflect on how home is built and rebuilt within contexts of migration and displacement. “La Chantin” invites the public to participate by activating the works through movement; the house ceases to be a fixed place and becomes a transformable territory, constantly negotiated by those who inhabit it. Aquí partilhamos alguns momentos da montagem desta “casa em trânsito”. Tal como o conceito da exposição, o processo foi uma construção coletiva, marcada pelo dinamismo e pela reinterpretação do espaço, desenvolvida em conjunto com @ciscomerel e a equipa da KL.

A exposição explora a arquitetura como um sistema vivo e mutável. Venham visitar e ativar o movimento destas estruturas! 🏠🛞

✨ Radiant Geometries✨

Very grateful for the invitation to be part of this extraordinary exhibition at the Moody Center for the Arts @themoodyarts , alongside wonderful artists from across the Americas.

*Radiant Geometries* explores geometry not only as form, but as a living language of knowledge, territory, memory, and connection between the earth, the sky, community, and the sacred—bringing Indigenous knowledge into dialogue with contemporary artistic practices.

A special thank you to Noor Alé, curator of the exhibition, for making this beautiful encounter possible and for bringing together diverse voices and perspectives around these ways of knowing.

En 𝘔𝘪𝘳𝘢𝘥𝘰𝘳 (2026), 𝘾𝙞𝙨𝙘𝙤 𝙈𝙚𝙧𝙚𝙡 recupera formas arquitectónicas populares para construir una pintura-escultura: una ventana que se abre sobre sí misma. Construida en espejo, sus colores se invierten y se enfrentan continuamente, borrando la distinción entre interior y exterior.

La obra parte del término panameño La Chantin, una arquitectura concebida para desmontarse, trasladarse y crecer según las necesidades de las familias y las comunidades. En ese contexto, repetir un modelo nunca significa producir una copia: cada nueva versión incorpora la memoria, las necesidades y las circunstancias de un contexto diferente.

Duplicar y repetir puede visitarse en Zielinsky Barcelona hasta el 10 de septiembre.

In 𝘔𝘪𝘳𝘢𝘥𝘰𝘳 (2026), 𝘾𝙞𝙨𝙘𝙤 𝙈𝙚𝙧𝙚𝙡 draws on vernacular architectural forms to construct a painting-sculpture: a window that opens onto itself. Built in mirror, its colours are reversed and continuously confront one another, dissolving the distinction between interior and exterior.

The work draws on the Panamanian term La Chantin, a form of architecture conceived to be dismantled, relocated, and expanded according to the needs of families and communities. Within this context, repeating a model never means producing a copy; each new iteration incorporates the memory, needs, and circumstances of a different place.

Com curadoria de Camilla Rocha Campos e Claudia Jaguaribe, a mostra propõe um diálogo entre artistas contemporâneos e referências de diferentes culturas das Américas, a partir do núcleo de arte pré-colombiana da coleção Eva Klabin.

Last days to visit 𝘓𝘢 𝘊𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘯, 𝘾𝙞𝙨𝙘𝙤 𝙈𝙚𝙧𝙚𝙡’s exhibition at Kunsthalle Lissabon.

Developed specifically for the space, the exhibition reflects on the house as a territory in transit, shaped by movement, memory, and community. Drawing on the mobile architectures associated with the Afro-Antillean diaspora during the construction of the Panama Canal, Merel proposes forms of inhabiting that remain open, collective, and in continuous transformation.
