Our second store design for @aesopskincare in Madrid highlights the interplay of Spanish Modernism and artisanal materials, featuring intricate Trencadís mosaics and the texture of hammered ‘Catedral’ glass. The transparent portico serves as the store’s focal point, offering glimpses into both the Front and Back of House activities.

Aesop Signature Store, Madrid - A place of encounter.

On Calle Claudio Coello, in the heart of Madrid’s vivacious Salamanca district, @aesopskincare has opened its first Spanish signature store. Created in collaboration with @mttfrr, the space honours the city’s artistic heritage, cultural eclecticism, and public spaces that prioritise social exchange.
Following Aesop’s customary attitude of architectural restraint, the 1923 building’s neoclassical façade has been preserved, along with its history of residential use and mid-twentieth-century commercial transformation. An in-built system in the front window diffuses Aesop’s aromas into the street, awakening the olfactory sense of passers-by. Product testers in the portico serve as a prologue to the warm-hued interior, where soft arches and decorative tiling evoke Madrid’s Moorish legacy and neo-Mudéjar architecture. A convivial basin of red Spanish travertine embraces two central columns and becomes the focal point for all interactions.
At the back of the room hangs a large macramé tapestry woven by María Asunción Raventós in the 1970s; its weighty, layered textures playing with visitors’ perception of volume.
Here, customers can explore and select from a complete range of skin, hair and body care products, distinguished by botanical and laboratory-generated ingredients of the highest quality.

A small interruption of colour.

Found in the everyday, a single leaf becomes a study in contrast, fragility and the unexpected beauty of natural forms.

A play of volumes and levels.

Double heights, arches and a hidden spiral staircase create different perspectives throughout the home, allowing light to move freely between spaces.

The architecture becomes a sequence of connected volumes, each revealing something different as you move through the house.

From earth to light.

The ceramic lamps of Ibiza Rosso Corsa were created in collaboration with Laura de Grinyo of @ladioceramics, an Ibizan artist whose practice reinterprets traditional island pottery through organic forms, contemporary textures and functional design. Commissioned by @dimanche.swiss in Geneva, the collection draws on Ibiza’s material culture, architecture and archaeological fragments, bringing together local knowledge, material research and the process of making.

Cork, material study.

Our exploration of cork began in 2008, when Active People invited us to design a toy for young and adults. A mysterious object built around contrasts, it explores the interaction between the softness and warmth of cork and the hardness and coolness of metal. Two materials with opposing qualities come together through touch, inviting curiosity and discovery.

Design begins with collecting.

Glass, reflections, textures and fragments come together in an evolving archive, where materials are observed, compared and reconsidered as starting points for new ideas.
