POSTS STORIES REELS

We are happy to introduce the new Master in Design (MDes) in Interior Design at IE School of Architecture and Design @iearchdesign . An intensive 10-month, in-person program based in Madrid, designed to equip students with the skills and knowledge to become leaders in the field of interior design.

Statistically, people in the Western world spend a significant majority of their time indoors. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reports that the average American spends approximately 90% of their time indoors, which translates to about 21 hours per day.

This has implications for health and well-being, including exposure to indoor. air quality, which is often 2-5 times more polluted than outdoor air. The dominance of indoor living highlights the importance of designing spaces that promote health, natural light, and access to outdoor environments.

Interior design plays a pivotal role within the creative industries, driving innovation, fostering creativity, demonstrating resilience and making significant societal contributions.

Interior designers possess the power to transform spaces and elevate the human experience. Making an impact in interior design entails mastering sustainable practices, understanding ergonomic principles and leveraging technology.

It also involves understanding business dynamics, mastering client relationship management and aligning design solutions with overarching strategic objectives.

Our Master in Interior Design offers a distinctive educational journey. Students enhance their foundational design skills with knowledge in sustainability, business and craft specifically applied to the interior design field.

This comprehensive approach prepares them to lead and innovate, equipping them with the skills needed to excel as interior designers worldwide. Our program sets the stage for the next generation of interior design leaders, empowering them to make a significant impact.

How do we protect space for reflection in a culture driven by speed? What role do intuition and experimentation still play in contemporary creative practice?

A couple of weeks ago, Interior Design Conversations welcomed Andrea Caruso (@ciszak_dalmas), Academic Director of the Master in Interior Design and Co-founder of Ciszak Dalmas, Suzannah Pettigrew (@suz_p), multidisciplinary artist, and Sean Gregory Peron, Chief Marketing Officer at @loewe_perfumes (LVMH Group), for a conversation on authorship, technology, and the evolving realities of creative work.

Curated and moderated by guest host Liam Aldous (@madcity_dispatch), the session considered how designers and artists continue to cultivate originality while navigating increasingly accelerated and algorithmically shaped creative landscapes.

What does it mean to cultivate a creative voice in an age of acceleration? How do originality and critical thinking persist within increasingly fast-paced creative environments?

Last week’s Interior Design Conversations brought together Andrea Caruso (@ciszak_dalmas), Academic Director of the Master in Interior Design and Co-founder of Ciszak Dalmas, Suzannah Pettigrew (@suz_p), multidisciplinary artist, and Sean Gregory Peron, Chief Marketing Officer at @loewe_perfumes (LVMH Group), for a conversation on creativity, authorship, and the changing conditions of contemporary practice.

Curated and moderated by guest host Liam Aldous (@madcity_dispatch), the discussion reflected on the value of intuition, experimentation, and process, offering thoughtful perspectives on how designers continue to navigate the balance between technology, originality, and cultural relevance.

What does it mean to find a creative voice in a moment defined by acceleration, automation, and constant informational noise? When tools evolve faster than reflection, how do ideas retain depth, friction, and intention?

This upcoming conversation brings together Suzannah Pettigrew (@suz_p), multidisciplinary artist, and Sean Gregory Peron, Chief Marketing Officer at Loewe Perfumes (LVMH Group)(@loewe_perfumes), to reflect on how contemporary creative practice is shaped by new technological and cultural conditions. How do practitioners protect space for intuition, iteration, and imperfection when production cycles are increasingly compressed? And what forms of originality are still possible within algorithmically shaped aesthetics and market-driven narratives?

Together, they will explore how creatives navigate between experimentation and expectation, searching for balance between process and output, individuality and influence.

Part of Interior Design Conversations, a series that explores how interior spaces can create meaning, foster wellbeing, and drive positive change through design.

This edition is curated and moderated by guest host Liam Aldous (@madcity_dispatch), Writer, Consultant & Founder of ColourFeel and Another Future Festival (@anotherfuturefestival), and Spain Correspondent at Monocle Magazine.

We were honoured to welcome Carlos Dimas from MESURA, the award-winning architecture practice based in Barcelona, for an inspiring conversation with Eduardo Mediero from HANGHAR, who leads the course Building a Design Career in the Master in Interior Design, Andrea Caruso from CISZAK DALMAS and program director, and all our students.

The session encouraged students to reflect on the realities of building a successful design practice. Carlos shared MESURA’s journey from its beginnings after university to becoming one of the most respected young architecture studios today.

Through an honest conversation, students gained insight into the challenges behind the achievements: participating in more than 30 competitions before securing their first win, facing the risk of losing almost all their clients during the pandemic, and finding the resilience, vision, and persistence needed to overcome setbacks and continue growing through international awards and commissions.

Many thanks to Eduardo for organising this inspiring exchange, and to Carlos for sharing his experience so generously with our students.

Developed within Design Studio 1: Spaces for Living, Experiment and Critique, led by Amaia Sánchez-Velasco and Jorge Valiente from Grandeza Studio (@grandeza.studio), these projects reflected on domestic environments as active agents in shaping social behaviours, desires, and cultural imaginaries. Rather than treating interiors as static settings, students approached them as evolving systems embedded within broader urban and ecological conditions.

Through research and speculative design, these projects explored alternative models of cohabitation, questioning established ideas of comfort, ownership, and domestic order. They proposed new spatial arrangements grounded in care, adaptability, and collective agency.

What happens when industrial heritage becomes a living cultural framework? How do spaces evolve when their original function is no longer their defining identity?

Recently, students visited Serrería Belga (@serreria_belga) as part of the class Multipurpose and Re-Purposed Spaces, led by Jorge Sobejano (@burr.studio) and @javijimeneziniesta (Studio Animal).

Located within Madrid’s Paisaje de la Luz, a UNESCO World Heritage site, Serrería Belga is a former early 20th-century industrial building now transformed into a multidisciplinary cultural space dedicated to art, design, literature, music, image, and gastroculture. Its layered identity offered students a direct encounter with the complexities of adaptive reuse, where history, programme, and contemporary cultural production coexist.

The visit opened up questions around how interiors operate within existing structures, and how reuse can become a design methodology in itself.
