Quite the doorstop of a book - Jeff Vandermeer has yet to disappoint me. The Southern Reach books were all great, this collection was great. I don’t really know how to describe the story or the writing style. It’s surreal all the time, you have to just let the waves take you and not try and jump ahead mentally. It’s an exercise in just listening to the author spin an incredibly bizarre yarn and taking it for what it is. Being present with where the story is. One book is an entire history of the city of Ambergris where half the page is footnotes written by a fictional author. The next book is a memoir by that authors sister which is over dubbed by the author’s (subject of the memoir) notes and interjections, but the author is dead? Right? Then a noir detective story that gets weirder and weirder with each paragraph. Zero chill. And don’t forget the short stories that start the book off - a woman with no hands terrified of a birdcage that contains something invisible. A man in love with what he believes is a woman in a window. Challenging at times, but ultimately rewarding. Everything had value in the end. This isn’t even a recommendation, just admiration for something that felt like a unique reading experience. taken in Malden, Massachusetts by @citizenlusca

4 years without my sweet, strange, sleepy girl. Always keen to join for a nap wherever it was happening. Always excited for a snack. Maybe a little too patient with Uyu, but when she did stand firm it was impressive. I wish we had the luxury of more time together - more staring contests, more half-lap snuggles before bedtime and when it was time to wake up. I miss my gentle weirdo - I hope you are resting easy in that sunbeam you travelled away on. by @citizenlusca

5th Nutmeg Nor’Easter on the books! 3rd in our lean-to. Second year as a volunteer. Always glad to make some new acquaintances, see some regular favorites, have a good time having a hard time on a beautiful day. Thanks @badd_buddhist and @ultraromance for the good vibes and muted earth tones. Already excited for 2026! taken in Deer Lake Day Camp by @citizenlusca

Our sweet handsome little prince turns 1 today. Fig is a very sweet boy, very sincere, quick to purr. He loves birds and window sills, he loves getting his older sister to hiss at him, he loves crunchies. He’s a strange boy, and sometimes he seems like he’s possibly an alien. I should check for a zipper or a battery compartment. He’s been working on being less shy, sometimes even enjoying new people. Too many more years of sweet Figlet, Figgy Stardust, Figgy Smalls, Figglebits, Figgity Wiggity. taken in Malden, Massachusetts by @citizenlusca

30th anniversary screening of Hackers!! Introduced by Lord Nikon himself. They even played trailers for The Lawnmower Man and Johnny Mnemonic before the actual movie. It was fucking awesome and an amazing crowd calling out lines. “Mess with the best - Die like the rest!” Crash and Burn 4 ever. 1337 taken in Somerville Theatre by @citizenlusca

35th Anniversary of the first TMNT movie! I saw it in theaters when I was 7, and it blew my mind, and I probably haven’t seen it for 30 years. We dressed up in green and agreed on going with the OG red bandanna for all the turtles, though we were all Donnie and Mikey fans. I remembered so many lines and the soundtrack. Did you know a young Sam Rockwell made his debut in this movie?! It was very cowabunga and it made me so happy. Turtle Power! taken in Rochester, New York by @citizenlusca

@meadowcrosschamps - because I’m not hardcore about it, and softcore sounds weird, but biking through a meadow is never not a great feeling. taken in Boston, Massachusetts by @citizenlusca

My friendly Atlantis - a convergence of things that got me started in this general hemisphere of bikes and riding. It doesn’t take itself seriously, it’s not in a rush but can get going if the situation presents itself, doesn’t mind if it’s loaded up or not, it looks backwards and forwards at the same time, whatever works is just fine. I am still getting to know it, but its personality is hard to recreate. taken in Willowdale State Forest by @citizenlusca
