Today I turn big man 42. Looking back at this past year, it feels like an entire lifetime of transition was packed into 12 months. Year 41 tested me deeply, forcing me to rebuild my boundaries. Growth also showed up in my purpose. Getting to work within the art therapy realm daily here in Baltimore has been incredibly grounding. This year brought a massive milestone with my son graduating high school, alongside releasing my first book. Hitting 42 also brings a strange realization. Growing up, I looked at my parents at this age and thought they had it all figured out. They seemed to carry a level of gravity and certainty that I just don't feel right now. It makes me wonder, did they actually have the answers, or were they just winging it and making it up as they went? The reality is, the world we are navigating now is completely different. The economy, education, the societal shifts, everything has changed, and the old blueprints don't apply anymore. We are all just figuring it out in real time.As I look ahead and think about what life will look like moving toward my 50s, the questions look a bit different. Last year I wondered if I should bring more children into this world, and those reflections on legacy and family are still evolving. But professionally and creatively, the vision is getting sharper. In a world increasingly dominated by AI, I find myself feeling very cautious of it, wanting to intentionally pivot away from the digital noise and return to the physical. I want to spend this next chapter honing my craft and mastering tangible skills like sewing, carpentry, and working with clay. Using your hands will be so important in the days ahead. Today, I’m just deeply grateful for my health, for the lessons of the soil, and for another year to keep building, creating, and becoming. by @citizinss

Yes, that is real rice.For the launch of "There's Jollof Rice At Home!", I didn't want the packaging to be an afterthought. I wanted it to be a multidisciplinary art piece that sets the stage before you even open the book.I spent weeks in the lab experimenting with materials to get this texture just right while ensuring the books remained in prefect condition.The Grain: I used real uncooked rice, experimenting with colors in a bag to find the exact mix of tones that would mimic a fresh pot of Jollof.The Sculpture: I used a paste mold to create those raised, custom patterns on the top of the box, giving the package a tactile, 3D experience.The Seal: To secure the grains as a permanent part of the art, I used a combination of glue, glue spray, and a high-gloss varnish. The varnish protects the book and gives the rice a realistic, fresh finish.As a visual artist, the process is everything. I wanted my first customers to feel the care and the technical detail I poured into the presentation of this project.The first batch is officially ready to ship next week.
