There’s plenty of excitement in Old Town Chinatown, one of Portland’s most historic neighborhoods. Sure, it’s a little grungy, but the local history runs deeper than the Shanghai Tunnels. Let’s explore the fascinating past and present of Old Town Chinatown.

This tree has no business looking this good. 🍁

Every fall, the Japanese maple tree at the @portlandjapanesegarden turns bright red, and suddenly everyone in Portland seems to have the same photography plans.

Can’t really blame them.

Between the twisting branches, the leaves covering the ground, and all those shades of red, there’s a lot to look at for just one tree.

And if you’ve been meaning to visit, now’s the time! The tree is at peak fall color right now, and with wind and rain in the forecast, who knows how much longer those leaves will stick around.

I think this tree might have more portraits than most people. 📸🍁 by @citycastpdx

A little Wildwood magic. 🌲🌫️

The fog had other plans for the view from @pittockmansion

Instead of the usual Portland skyline and Mt Hood, there were trees disappearing into the mist and an old mansion that looked like it belonged in a storybook.

If you’re familiar with Wildwood, the Portland-inspired fantasy by Colin Meloy, you can probably see why the forests around the West Hills feel like a fitting setting for a little magic.

And if you’ve only visited Pittock Mansion on a clear day, you might want to try a foggy morning sometime. It’s a completely different experience.

🚘 Parking update: Heads up if you haven’t visited recently! Pittock Mansion is managing its main parking lot instead of the city’s usual hourly parking system. It’s now a flat $7 daily rate, with no shorter hourly options. There are also limited free gravel parking areas along Pittock Drive.

Turns out you don’t always need a mountain view to have a good morning at Pittock. 🌫️ by @citycastpdx

This fall, Portland has watched a dazzling new omakase and a celebrity chef-owned trattoria open, but they’re not alone: the city’s autumnal arrivals also include a few returns and revamps. Jinju is back with croissants and salt bread, and the Richmond Bar is now the Richmond Club, replete with chicken frites and sultry cocktails. Here’s what’s new, and what to get while you’re there.

Downtown Portland is alive and thriving, with foot traffic rising for the fifth straight year. Among the high-rises, people are learning, falling in love, eating en plein air, and wingin’ it all over the place in search of characters from a movie (that also happens to be a touching love letter to the city). Let’s explore the heart of Portland.

Multnomah Falls, fall edition. 🍁

A few autumn scenes from Multnomah Falls, where the trees are adding a little yellow and orange to one of Oregon’s most recognizable views.

At 620 feet tall, Multnomah Falls is Oregon’s tallest waterfall, with two drops and a historic footbridge crossing between them.

This is one of the easiest drops in the Columbia River Gorge. You don’t need to commit to a long hike to enjoy the main view, although there’s a short uphill walk if you want to reach the bridge.

📍 A few things to know if you’re planning a visit:
• Getting there: About a 30–40-minute drive east of Portland along I-84, depending on traffic.
• The viewpoint: You can see the waterfall from the lower viewing area without doing a hike. For a closer look, walk uphill to Benson Bridge.
• Fall colors: Late October into early November can be a lovely time for autumn foliage, although the timing varies with weather.
• Crowds: Weekday mornings are usually quieter than weekends. Parking can fill up quickly, even outside summer.
• Good to know: The waterfall is accessible year-round, weather permitting. Summer season will require parking permits.

Not a bad excuse for another trip out to the Gorge. 🍂 by @citycastpdx

All aboard Amtrak’s newest Cascade trains, connecting from Vancouver, BC to Eugene, Oregon.🚆We got a sneak peek aboard during their inaugural trip – the train got some serious upgrades.

Consider this your sign to skip I-5, let somebody else deal with the traffic, and enjoy the scenic views along the PNW. by @citycastpdx
