Happy Indigenous Peoples’ Day! Today, Philadelphians gathered at Penn Treaty Park to honor Indigenous history and culture. But looking beyond the day’s celebrations, how much do you really know about the treaty that gave the park its namesake?

Philly’s colonization lore tells the story of a treaty, originally called the Treaty of Shackamaxon, made between the Lenape people and William Penn for peace and the formal purchase of the land that would become Philadelphia.

But how much of that story is true?

While the legend of the signing at what is now called Penn Treaty Park under an elm tree exists, there is no record of William Penn or Chief Tamanend, the Indigenous leader said to have signed the land deal, meeting at the park.

One such perpetrator of this lore is a famous artistic depiction of the event: a painting by Benjamin West from the early 1770s. This depiction was likely not meant to be a historical representation of the event, but rather a symbolic one. Historians say there was no singular written record or treaty between William Penn and the Lenape people, but rather multiple treaties throughout the area. In fact, Chief Tamanend had no part in the Shackamaxon land deal, but did sign one more north between Neshaminy and Pennypack Creeks.

However, within 100 years of first contact with the settlers, the Indigenous people of the area were ultimately driven out by continuous colonial expansion and disease.

Despite the uncertainty around the origin story of Philadelphia, the pictured obelisk stands today at the location of the elm tree where the signing of the treaty may or may not have happened. by @citycastphilly

Before it was “University City,” it was Black Bottom.

Can formal city recognition make an impact after decades of community displacement, or does meaningful accountability require more?

Pennsylvania is one of just a handful of states with completely closed primary elections, barring independent and third-party voters from choosing candidates in the spring.

Now, a bipartisan bill sponsored by Philly State Rep. Jared Solomon would open PA primaries to unaffiliated voters. With House passage secured, the measure moves to the state Senate.

Should Pennsylvania open its primaries to independent voters?

Whatever you do while running the Schuylkill River Trail… do NOT drop your phone in this toilet!

Santiago Ortiz @noshortsusa took the team down a rabbit hole about the trail’s ultra eco-friendly composting bathroom—and honestly, the visual of that concrete drop is a nightmare.

Would you actually use it, or are you holding it until you get home? by @citycastphilly

Tomorrow is National Coffee Day, and with NYC coffee chain Blank Street opening in Rittenhouse, Philly had a lot to say about where they get their coffee. ☕️

We mentioned the opening of Blank Street in our newsletter, and City Cast Philly readers weighed in. Opinions were mixed, but it resulted in some really great recommendations for local coffee shops in the city.

- Center City / Rittenhouse: Vibrant Coffee, Elixr, Rowhome Coffee

- Queen Village / South Philly: Shot Tower, Herman’s, Caffè Ida

- Fairmount / Spring Garden: Coffee Cream and Dreams, Milano Mornings
