CITY OF ECHOES × CRISTÓBAL CASTILLO LACKINGTON

New York keeps its own tempo — this week we followed chilean bassist and composer Cristóbal Castillo Lackington through Central Park as he prepares to release Present Tense, his debut album as a bandleader.

“My idea isn’t to reproduce exactly what others already played — it’s to capture the fundamental reason why they did it. How they did it belongs to the aesthetic of a certain era: how things were made, how people lived, I suppose.”

Out now on Spotify, Apple Music, Bandcamp, YouTube Music, Deezer, and SoundCloud — link in bio.

Story and photography: City of Echoes, in collaboration with Cristóbal Castillo Lackington.

In a city of millions — artists, musicians, painters, composers — some of them catch my eye.
Not because of their fame. Because of the way they think. What they believe about art. How they keep going.

Immigrants building lives between cultures. That’s the story I know. That’s the story I tell.

New York is a gallery itself. Met @alejandropinzonart at one of the exhibitions organized by @ortiz.art.management It was such an interesting moment to meet so many artists from everywhere in the world. Everyone with a different perspective on migration and their artistic work. So much fun and interesting conversations. Excited to see more of these exhibitions.

Where does the inspiration comes from?
Alesy Ortiz @ortiz.art.management is an art manager who also comes from a Hispanic family, and she's thrilled to support migrant artists in sharing their work.

📍 Janet Hennessey Dilenschneider Gallery, The Sheen Center
🗓 Hasta el 29 de octubre · Entrada gratuita

On Thursday, Queens of Memory opened at the Sheen Center, an exhibition by Chilean artist Daniela Meza Sigala, organized by the Gabriela Mistral Foundation and curated by Gloria Garafulich-Grabois. 🌵✨

It’s a journey through the poetry of Gabriela Mistral: her years as a rural schoolteacher, “We Were All Going to Be Queens”, and the flora of the Chilean desert. Daniela’s paintings are beautiful, with female figures suspended between dream and memory. She developed much of her technique over 30 years living in Florence, Italy. Her use of gold leaf is impeccable, and her landscapes and backgrounds are rich with layers and color.

📍 Janet Hennessey Dilenschneider Gallery, The Sheen Center
🗓 Through October 29 · Free admission
