๐ŸŒ CELEBRATING 70 YEARS OF INTERNATIONAL FRIENDSHIP! ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ช

Today, October 14, the City of Foley recognizes Sister Cities International Day, celebrating 70 years of building friendships, fostering cultural understanding and connecting communities around the world!

Since establishing its sister-city partnership with Hennef, Germany, in 2022, Foley has helped bring the two communities closer through four student exchanges, an adult exchange and an international, intergenerational cookbook.

In recognition of this milestone, Mayor Ralph Hellmich presented a proclamation to Foley Sister Cities Executive Director Linda Spangrud and Board Chairman Jo Hellmich.

๐ŸŽ‰ The celebration continues! Foley Sister Cities will host its inaugural Oktoberfest Golf Jamboree on October 23 at GlenLakes Golf Club. While golf teams are sold out, tickets are still available for the evening Oktoberfest celebration featuring German food, beverages and live music!

Residents can also explore a free Sister Cities exhibit at the Foley Community Library throughout October.

We're sharing a few special moments from past exchanges and visits to Germany!

Auf viele weitere Jahre der Freundschaft! ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿค๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ช

๐Ÿšซ REMINDER: BURN BAN REMAINS IN EFFECT

As residents continue cleanup efforts following Hurricane Isaias, the City of Foley reminds everyone that the burn ban remains in effect through October 31.

Residents should not burn limbs, branches, leaves or other vegetative storm debris. Instead, place debris at the roadside for collection by City crews.

Beginning November 1, residents may apply for a burn permit. A permit must be obtained before burning.

For more information about the burn ban or burn permit applications, please contact the Foley Fire Department at 251-943-1266.

Thank you for helping keep our community safe as storm cleanup continues. by @cityoffoley

Residents should also:

- Get 2โ€“3 written estimates when possible.

- Contact your insurance company before authorizing major repairs.
- Avoid paying large amounts upfront or paying entirely in cash.
- Never sign your insurance check over to a contractor.

The City of Foley has begun post-storm recovery operations following Hurricane Isaias.

Preliminary assessments conducted by City crews overnight indicate that Foley avoided the widespread damage experienced during previous major hurricanes. However, several areas sustained damage, including downed trees, power outages and debris along roadways.

DOWNED TREES AND DAMAGE: City crews identified significant tree damage in the area between Myrtle Avenue and Highway 98, from Alston Street to Cedar Street. Additional downed trees were observed in the northwestern portion of the city and at Graham Creek.

โšก POWER OUTAGES: Riviera Utilities and Baldwin EMC are have mobilized to continue restoration efforts this morning. Residents should stay away from downed power lines and avoid approaching trees or debris that may be in contact with electrical equipment.

๐Ÿšง ROAD CLEARING: City crews and contracted crews worked overnight to remove fallen trees and clear roadways where conditions allowed. Additional assessments and clearing operations are underway today. Motorists should remain cautious and avoid areas where crews are working.

๐ŸŒง๏ธ FLOODING: Initial assessments have not identified significant flooding issues within the city. City crews will continue monitoring conditions.

City crews began additional damage assessments early this morning to identify priority areas for debris removal and roadway clearing. These assessments will help guide recovery operations throughout the day.

While initial reports are encouraging, the full extent of damage is not yet known. Some areas were surveyed after dark, and additional damage may be identified during daylight inspections.

The City of Foley appreciates the dedication of our City crews, emergency responders, utility crews and contractors who have worked throughout the storm and into the recovery period.

We will continue providing updates as additional information becomes available. by @cityoffoley

As Hurricane Isaias approaches our area, residents are urged to avoid contact with floodwater and stay out of waterways during and immediately after the storm.

- Pesticides and fertilizers washed into floodwater by heavy rainfall.

- Hidden hazards such as debris, downed power lines and open manholes.

- Displaced wildlife forced out of natural habitats and into areas where people live and work.

Floodwater is often murky, making it difficult to identify potential dangers. Some contaminants are invisible to the naked eye, meaning water that appears safe may still pose serious health risks.
