CITY OF PULLMAN ANNOUNCES ADDITIONAL STAFF REDUCTIONS

The City of Pullman is laying off five employees in October and reducing the hours of one in a continued attempt to balance the City’s budget. These changes are part of more than two years of implementing cost-cutting measures City-wide, including previous staff reductions, changes to operations and services, deferred or canceled capital expenditures, and budget reductions across all City of Pullman departments.

The positions impacted are:

Community Development: Two Building Inspectors, One Assistant City Planner
Impacts: Reduced and redistributed workload

Fire Department: One Administrative Assistant
Impacts: Redistributed workload

Library: One part-time Library Assistant, reduced hours for one full-time Administrative Assistant
Impacts: Reduced and redistributed workload

Fire Department impacts also include changing the status of six Reserve Firefighters from zero hours to laid off, effective November 9, 2026.

October’s layoffs and staff changes will reduce total employee hours by the equivalent of five full-time employees, and all twelve affected employees were notified prior to this release. This effort, combined with voluntary separations and a hiring freeze, has reduced the City’s workforce by the equivalent of thirty-one (31) full-time positions in 2026, or approximately 10% of City’s total workforce since January.

“It’s incredibly difficult to make these kinds of decisions, especially the ones that directly impact our team,” said City Administrator Sean Wells. “But if we want to build a sustainable Pullman, we have to make the hard choices that will allow us to preserve the core services we provide in our community.”

The City of Pullman is currently finalizing the Mayor’s Proposed 2027-2028 Biennial Budget, which will be presented to Pullman City Council on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, at the regular City Council meeting. This meeting will also include the presentation of proposed budgets for the Metropolitan Parks District Board and the Transportation Benefit District Board, as well as preliminary Public Hearings on all three budgets.
