🌳 We know how much Wilmington's tree canopy means to our community. It means a lot to us, too.

Preserving our mature urban forest is always a top priority for our team, and removing one is always an absolute last resort. Unfortunately, in some situations, preservation is simply not possible without risking the safety of our community.

This week, crews removed three structurally compromised laurel oaks along S. Live Oak Parkway, with one additional tree scheduled for removal next week. While some may have appeared healthy from the outside, our trained City arborists identified extensive internal decay, making them a serious public safety hazard.

The photos we're sharing show what our crews discovered:
• Large areas of severe decay in the major branches supporting the full weight of the tree canopy
• Internal cavities so massive that a 24-inch rod or an 18-inch hand saw could be inserted almost completely into the voids
• Hidden severe structural decay was within the main branch unions, consistent with what happens when laurel oaks fail

We know losing mature trees is difficult, which is why we're committed to replacing them. This fall, when the conditions are suitable, we expect to replant with new resilient live oaks where possible. In areas with overhead power lines, underground utilities, or limited growing space, we'll plant 2-3 smaller, appropriate tree species.

Speaking of power lines, the City is not involved in trimming trees near them. That is the sole responsibility of Duke Energy, which can be reached at 800-228-8485.

Wilmington’s urban forest is one of our most treasured assets, and we're deeply committed to protecting and growing it for future generations. Moving forward, we'll be sharing additional resources and public education about how we evaluate tree health and why these difficult decisions are sometimes necessary.

The City is entering Phase 2 of the North Carolina Resilient Coastal Communities Program, a planning effort focused on reducing the impacts of flooding, storms, and sea-level rise while identifying projects that will make our community safer and more resilient.

Join us for an Open House on Tuesday, July 28, from 5:30–7:30 p.m. at the Davis Community Center, 1101 Manly Ave., to learn more, share your ideas, and help prioritize future resilience projects.

Last night, Wilmington City Council was honored to recognize Maj. James Capers Jr., a true American hero whose courage, leadership, and service have left a lasting legacy.

A retired U.S. Marine Corps officer, Maj. Capers served with distinction during the Vietnam War, leading some of the military's most dangerous reconnaissance missions. Throughout his remarkable career, he broke barriers as the first African American Marine to command a Marine Recon company and the first enlisted African American Marine to receive a battlefield commission to officer.

In June, Maj. Capers received the Congressional Medal of Honor, our nation's highest military award, recognizing his extraordinary acts of valor and selfless service during the Vietnam War.

Summer is making itself known today 🥵

A Heat Advisory is in effect with heat index values expected to reach 103° to 108°. If you need to be outdoors, drink plenty of water, take frequent breaks in the shade or air conditioning, and check on children, older adults, and pets.

As the city gears up to welcome a Brick Convention, we're challenging builders of all ages to put their creativity to the test in our Building Memories LEGO® Competition!

🏗️ Your mission: Build your favorite Wilmington place or memory using LEGO® (or comparable) bricks. It could be a beloved landmark, your favorite park, a festival, a family tradition, or a moment that makes Wilmington feel like home.
Then, your creation will be displayed for two weeks at City Hall, where the community can stop by, admire everyone's builds, and vote for their favorite! Online voting will also be available. Winner will receive tickets to the Brick Convention.

Community is what makes Wilmington special. ⚽💙

Yesterday, hundreds of neighbors, families, and friends gathered at Riverfront Park to experience one of the world's biggest sporting events together. From kids playing soccer before kickoff to fans cheering side by side, it was an afternoon that brought people together.

Events like these create opportunities to connect, enjoy our public spaces, and experience everything our downtown and riverfront have to offer.

For Coach, the power of safe spaces goes beyond a building. It’s about providing a place where youth can be themselves, build confidence, and know they have someone in their corner. Whether he’s offering advice, cheering on a student’s accomplishments or simply being a trusted role model, Coach believes small moments can make a lasting impact.
