OCTOBER 24th City Relief Summit! ⬇️
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Would you know what to do?

Three situations, all real patterns in New York right now. None began with a bad choice.

On the street. A man loses his hours. SNAP gets cut the same month. By winter he’s sleeping outside, and you’ve now passed him three days in a row.

In a shelter. A mom and her 12-year-old are asked to leave the relative’s apartment they’ve lived in for years. The only open bed is 90 minutes from his school. He starts showing up late and exhausted, and you notice at drop-off, because he’s in your kid’s class.

About to lose a home. A young mom aged out of foster care. At 25, her support stopped overnight. She has a six-year-old and is weeks from finishing her degree, but she hasn’t been able to work, and now she’s holding an eviction notice. Does she ask for help and risk losing her child to the same system that raised her?

Now imagine it’s your coworker, your neighbor, or your kid’s teammate, and they tell you.

Would you know how to respond?

Most of us care. Most of us just don’t know where to start. That’s where the Summit comes in.

Cedric said he used to throw food away without thinking twice, but one day volunteering with City Relief changed that.

Cedric is a truck driver with 11 years on the job. Homelessness in New York wasn't something he saw up close until he showed up to volunteer.

He came back a second time. Everyone from our partners at @braenstone who has volunteered with City Relief says they would do it again.

Showing up changes how you see the world outside your own routine.

Like this post and follow us for more stories from the streets of New York and New Jersey.

Being unhoused doesn’t make someone less human or less worthy of compassion and respect. Our circumstances should never determine how we treat someone who has nowhere to go. by @cityrelief

Mark had his own apartment. He is diagnosed with bipolar disorder, anxiety, and major depression. When the program that was supposed to provide mental health support closed and never reopened, he found himself unable to manage his symptoms and fell into homelessness.

He ended up at a City Relief outreach. He sat down, put his bag on the floor, and told himself he was not moving. A member of our outreach team noticed his face and asked if he was all right.

Mark said no, and City Relief stepped in to help.

Tomorrow is World Mental Health Day. Mark's story is a reminder that mental health care and housing instability are deeply intertwined, and we need programs that address them in tandem.

Join us for the City Relief Summit

Beyond powerful keynotes, you’ll choose from breakout sessions designed to equip you for the work of compassion in your own home and neighborhood.

Helping Our Kids See
How to raise compassionate children who notice, and know how to care well for, our most vulnerable neighbors.

Our children are watching how we respond to the person on the corner, the family in the shelter, the neighbor no one else stops for. This session explores how to cultivate real compassion in kids, keep them safe, and teach them to love their homeless neighbors with dignity and tact.

Your guides:

@dansadlier, Pastor and Advancement Lead, City Relief
@imterencelester , author of Zion Learns to See
@iamlydialucas , author and nonprofit executive

City Relief's cost-per-meal was $1.05 in 2021. In five years, that cost has risen to $1.79. That's a 70% increase.

Between October and June, our teams served 38,138 meals.

At the old price, that's about $40,000 in expenses. At today's price, it's roughly $70,000.

Fuel, drinks, and everything else our buses carry went up too.

Making it even harder is that costs rise, so does the need. Costs have increased for all of us, including people who were already struggling to afford groceries. Now, our lines are longer.

If you have the means, make a donation to support our work at the link in our bio, or by going to cityrelief.org/give
