What does good leadership look like in a group where nobody wants to be the boss?
Since December 2024, we have explored that question with more than a hundred grassroots organisers from Austria and Poland. Here is what came out of it:
Film: a short film on leadership in self-organised social change groups
Zine: a free guide with practices for relationships, conflict, storytelling and structure
Interviews: four people who lead in very different places, from a human rights group and a farming cooperative to a volunteer team and a civil society organisation

💫Six editions and hundreds of encounters💫
What does the Cross-Movement Open Space (CMOS) look like in numbers?🤔

Over the past six editions of CMOS we have welcomed:
👉360 participants,
👉110 initiatives,
👉who co-created 70 sessions

And none of this would have been possible without the support of our
49 Helping Hands!🤗

But numbers tell only part of the story…
👉There have been singing circles and dialogue walks,
👉meditations and brainstorming sessions,
👉project workshops, trainings, discussions and Storytelling Cafés.

Over the years, Cross-Movement Open Space gave people from different movements, such as climate justice, defence of democracy, circular economy, the right to the city and many morethe opportunity to come together and exchange ideas over a common topic.

And now, we’re doing it once again!

🎉7. Cross-Movement Open Space🎉
16-17 October 2026
Zwinglikirche, Schweglerstraße 39, 1150 Vienna
🎯Topic: Reclaiming Digital communication Spaces: How can we strengthen our digital sovereignty? Should we say goodbye to big tech?

Come bring your perspective. Meet across movements. Join the conversation!

Come along and find out! And don’t worry – after the workshop, there will be a shared dinner to continue the conversation.

7. CROSS-MOVEMENT OPEN SPACE
Reclaiming digital communication spaces
How can we strengthen our digital sovereignty?
Should we say goodbye to Big Tech?

🤔What happens when we stop trying to predict what solutions a certain problem needs, and instead create the space for people facing that problem to come together? That’s the foundation of Open Space Technology. It’s based on collective intelligence, trusting the group to spontaneously come up with the most productive way to deal with a shared issue.
Join us to experience the power of this self-organization principle within our next Open Space!🤝✨

The Cross-Movement Open Space brings together a community of people from different socio-ecological movements and civil society initiatives. Experienced facilitators hold the framework, while participants co-create the program by contributing with sessions.

The day starts with a gently moderated connection time, where we get to know each other. Then, anyone can propose a session related to our focus topic – this can be a question, idea, challenge, workshop, discussion, dance, meditation… or something else entirely! After the sessions are proposed, everyone is invited to choose where they want to contribute, what they want to explore and how they want to participate. This makes Open Space particularly powerful for complex questions where no single person, discipline or experience can provide the whole picture.

At the end of the day, we gather for another plenary, where we meet, reflect, exchange and “harvest” what has emerged during the different sessions. The result? Conversations that can move in unexpected directions, new connections between people and ideas, and sometimes solutions that wouldn’t have emerged from a program fixed in advance.

What would you bring to the space?
