It is called a "cold" war because the two superpowers never fought each other directly in a major military conflict. Instead, they competed through ideology, proxy wars, and an intense arms race.

The Battle of Stalingrad (1942–1943)
The Battle of Stalingrad was the ultimate turning point of World War II. Hitler wanted to capture the city because it was a major industrial hub and carried Joseph Stalin's name.
Brutal Urban Warfare: The German 6th Army entered the city, but the Soviets fought for every single street and ruined factory. It became a bloody, close-quarters battle known as the Rattenkrieg (Rat's War), where deadly Soviet snipers played a huge role.
The Soviet Trap: While the Germans were exhausted inside the city, the Soviet Red Army launched a massive counter-attack (Operation Uranus). They smashed through the weaker Axis flanks and completely surrounded 250,000 German soldiers.
Winter and Surrender: Trapped in the freezing Russian winter without food or supplies, the German forces faced starvation. Defying Hitler's orders to fight to the death, General Friedrich Paulus surrendered on February 2, 1943.
Why it matters: With over 2 million casualties, it was the bloodiest battle in history. It completely destroyed Germany's unstoppable reputation and forced them onto a permanent retreat until the end of the war.
