18 people. Two states. Four birthdays. One very full heart ❤️ We came together in Las Vegas to celebrate so many things including my 40th birthday, my cousin’s 45th birthday, my aunt’s 69th birthday, and my daughter’s 4th birthday 🎂 🎉 Between our Hawaiʻi and California family alone, we had 18 people celebrating together. And that’s just a fraction of our big, beautiful family 💛 As much as I love coming from a big family, what I love even more is how we show up for each other. Across states, generations, and all the different seasons of life, we make the effort to be there. The older I get, the more I realize what a privilege that is. This is a difficult post. For many reasons. Moanalua girls wrestling helped shape who I am. I have loved this program for nearly three decades, and my sister and I have continued to support its wrestlers long after our own time on the mat ended. But my loyalty has always been to the wrestlers — not a championship record, or an institution. I believe the wrestlers who have come forward. I believe the girls in this program deserve answers, accountability and, above everything else, safety. Please do not publicly tag current or former wrestlers in the comments of this post. We do not need to publicly associate someone with an experience they may or may not have had, especially with something this sensitive. If there is someone you believe should see this information, please send it to them privately or share screenshots directly with them. Let them decide what, if anything, they want to do next. There may be people reading this who are still trying to make sense of their own experiences. You do not need to have the right words for what happened. You do not need to know whether it was “bad enough.” And you do not have to carry it alone. I’ve included information for contacting the FBI as well as confidential support resources in Hawaiʻi. One of the interesting things about working with high-profile people over the years is getting a peek behind the curtain. You see who someone is when the cameras aren’t rolling—not just in how they treat people, but in the culture they create around themselves. Who they hire, how their team operates, and the policies and generosity they extend to the people who work with them. My experience working with @macklemore has always stuck with me. He was one of the most professional, thoughtful and considerate people I worked with, and that extended far beyond him personally. His team reflected it, and so did the way he chose to do business. There’s something special about respecting someone’s work, meeting the person behind it, and walking away respecting them even more. Years later, I still remember it. And lately, I’ve been thinking about it a little more… In case it wasn’t obvious: Free Palestine. And because I know this particular conversation can get complicated quickly: my perspective here isn’t coming only from personal experience with a famous person... My academic background is in historical and political studies, including the study of genocide, and I was awarded Outstanding Research at a history conference. So yes, I’ve thought about this. And I’m comfortable standing 10 toes down. Edit: turning off comments because some trolls are wildly inappropriate… too 🐓💩 to use real (accountable) accounts… SMH by @cjbae93

Birthdays ending in 0 or 5 deserve a little extra celebration, and this year is my nephew’s very first one…. Five 🥹🎉 This picture was taken when he was just two days old—the first time I got to hold him. I wasn’t there for every sleepless night and I certainly don’t get to claim the work of raising him… But loving him, showing up for him, and being someone who will always be firmly in his corner is a lifelong commitment 🩵 Five years of watching that tiny two-day-old baby grow into the funny, smart, wonderful little human he is now 🥰 And a very happy birth day to my sister!! I went to one of those fancy scalp spas where they put your scalp under a microscope and tell you everything you’ve been doing wrong 😂 10/10 experience. Also $$$ and definitely not something I’m doing on a regular basis 😝 The two things they recommended I add at home: a scalp treatment/conditioner + a scalp shampoo brush. I also threw in the hair conditioner I’ve been using forever because if we’re talking hair-wash day, she deserves a mention too. So I’m passing along the expensive scalp-spa knowledge for free.
