POSTS STORIES REELS

As it turns out, this diagnostic procedure my doctor does for CFS leaks is something only a few doctors in the country do, so I couldn’t be scheduled until the end of November to have it done. Then I get patched 2 weeks later in December. So that leaves me the month of December to recover until the new year. It’s not as soon as I would’ve liked to potentially get relief from these high pressure headaches but I guess it’s my sign to slow down in the fall. And it gives me more time to find a new job once my current contract finishes. If anyone has video editing work for me in the new year let me know. I’ll try to keep posting some reels throughout the hiatus.

I’m on medical hiatus until further notice. I have a CSF leak in my spine and am waiting for further diagnostic imaging before we can patch it up. I cannot bend or twist my body unnecessarily and unfortunately that means no pottery. It has been really difficult to rest and stop doing all the things in the studio but my body is demanding it and it’s what’s best for my back as well. It also means I should be horizontal as much as possible. Not very conducive to making pottery. I should be back sometime in October but won’t know more until mid-late August. Waiting is so fun!

Anyway here is my tribute to people with severe ME (myalgic encephalomyelitis aka Chronic Fatigue Syndrome) who are primarily housebound and bedbound and left behind by their friends, family, and medical system. I have mild-moderate ME but know people with severe ME and how underrepresented it is in the medical and social media spaces and wanted to bring awareness to the disease.

The barbed wire around the heart represents having a port for my POTS and how it feels like it both helps and protects my body from further symptoms while also be extremely uncomfortable, tethering, etc. The tubing around the piece similarly represents how having a port and doing IV fluids make me feel tethered to my IV bag, constantly getting caught in drawer handles, door handles, etc and yanking me around on a daily basis and also beholden to the medical admin of being responsible for my own care. The handle is a saline flush I made a plaster mold and slipcast, since this is an item on a daily basis by people who have ports. I have a drawer full of them. The small house is upside down to both hold a used teabag or snack (or meds!) but also represent how our homes sometimes don’t feel wholly comforting for people who are housebound, especially considering the lack of support people with severe ME get. Sometimes it can feel overwhelming that you can’t move about your house in an accessible way or in ways you used to be able to.

Coil-built vase inspired by Grayson Perry and decorated with white slip, underglazes, letter stamps, and stencils. I made this in my Queer For Clay class @gasworksnyc and I loved all the work and inspiration @samsonceramic showed us in class from the artist.
This has a lot of imagery and expressions from the disability and chronic illness community that I’ve experienced personally, things that have been said to me, and my mobility aids are pictured in various stencils. Which phrase on the vase do you think has been said to you most?

I banked all this footage last year and then never got around to editing it or getting final product shots. So here’s a process reel!

Underglaze transfers from @elantransfers & @sanbaostudio
Made with @gr.pottery.forms & @speedball_ceramics underglazes

I’m currently recovering from getting my port removed after having it for 4.5 years for IV fluids. So I’m focusing on taking it easy, resting, and hydrating. Stay safe out there folks 🫶

Clay for a Cause is a fundraiser put on by Potters who care about the state of the world. We all donate a piece to be sent to a winner, and the way to enter is just to donate to one of the causes that we as a community voted on. This fundraiser’s causes are: ACLU, Planned Parenthood, the Trevor Project, NILC, NPR, and PBS.

All you have to do is donate $10 or more to be entered and every $10 gets you another entry. The chances of winning are very good because we have 150 prizes !!!

Even if 50 more people join the fundraiser, everyone will win a piece!!! by @ckringceramics

Adding dots to lemons. I know lemons usually actually have little dimples all over but I like adding the slip dots and that tactile element it adds to the piece.

Using my @kaitlynabrennan pottery clamp to hold the piece in place 💜

I’ve been loving using @buschkraftstudio Dragonfly carving tools to carve my lemons. I use the fine point and chisel tips in this video and most often. I need to get my hands on some more fine points to play around with - and the arc carvers! Love these tools.

I’m donating my Upgrade Accessibility soda fired cup to @potters_rise_up Clay for a Cause. Every $10 donation to one of the orgs in @potters_rise_up bi0 equals 1 entry to win a ceramic piece by one of 150+ clay artists. The slides outline how it works. Best of luck and thank you for sharing or participating!

The Philadelphia Flyers are in the playoffs push and Ty Foerster is back when he was supposed to be out for the season. Dare I hope?

I’m still working on getting these Gritty cups to behave with the kiln ice glaze but I will get back to them soon I promise! I hope people are still interested in them in the off season. 🧡🖤

I made a Heated Rivalry book vase for myself! The book is from a 6 part mold I made from a thrifted book so it is slipcast. It took me a week to paint and I actually did a lot of painting during hockey intermissions. I wanted to use their uniforms from the show on this book vase cover and then them snuggling watching the sunset at the Cottage on the back seemed like a fitting back cover for Shane & Ilya and how the show ended. Them at the Cottage really was pure bliss 💖 I just finished rereading The Long Game and am v sad but also looking forward to Unrivaled and more Ottawa Centaurs nonsense ❤️

What book should I paint next?

Highlights, lowlights, and general happenings in my ceramics journey through 2025 this year. I took a Mold Making class and delved into plaster for the first time. I also did my first few soda firings at The Clay Studio and got a bevy of different results. I had a piece in my first exhibit and vended at two really successful markets during the holiday season. I’m looking forward to Flyers Pride Fest and hoping to apply to more shows in 2026.
