Last week, on Easter Monday, we said goodbye to our beautiful Dad.
There are no words to describe the weight of his passing or the depth of the void left in our lives. It’s too big to comprehend, too sharp to feel right now. Nothing could prepare you.

We have been overwhelmed by the support of our family, friends and neighbours. A testament to the quiet and consistent ways Dad showed up for those he cared for throughout his life. The love for him is palpable. I couldn’t be more proud to be his daughter.

Dad was a beloved nurse, an avid golfer, a brilliant goalkeeper, a true friend, a proud Mayo man,brother to seven siblings, uncle to many more, adored grandfather but above all else he was a one of a kind father. Hands on, prepared, so funny, present, fair, unbelievable craic, fiercely protective and just there - always there.

What I wouldn’t give to hear him tell one more of his infamous stories, to get off the plane at Knock Airport and see him waiting at the exact same spot as the double doors open every single time , discuss politics with him, watch a film and share a dairy milk, hear him sing the same two lines of a song repeatedly in the other room or drive out to Errit Lough and listen to him complain about the bad sign posting the whole way there and back.

His time with us was too fast, too short, too fleeting. The pain of his loss can only be patched up momentarily by the huge force of his enduring love and his big strong heart that held him to the end.

I’ll find new ways to tell him things, different ways to get his advice, other places to have a laugh with him and will just close my eyes to recall his stories. I’ll call on him when I need his resilience, gentleness and strength. I’ll celebrate our shared birthday with a pint of porter and a hot one every single year.

What a gift it is to be loved and to have loved so much. Thanks for showing me how.
