So honored to be in conversation with Jonathan Lethem (@jonathanlethem), a beloved author, for the Brooklyn Rail (@brooklynrail) during its 25th anniversary week and following this significant election moment in NYC. We explored the release of his new collection A Different Kind of Tension: New and Selected Stories, talking AI, the Buzzcocks, literary influences, space colonization, and more. While Tension is a collection of surreal short fiction, his other recent release, Cellophane Bricks: A Life in Visual Culture, is a striking assemblage of reflections on the artworks that inspire him, and a personal favorite. Thank you to The Nomadic Journal @doppelhouse for publishing my essay “LANGUAGE, LUNACY, AND THE LITERARY PROVOCATEUR: LIFE WRITING AND SCHIZOPHRENIA” where I touch on works that shift stigma surrounding mental illness through sharing personal narratives. @esmewwang ‘s autobiographical and critical “The Collected Schizophrenias” and Sarah Manguzo’s deep dive into surviving a loved one, “The Guardians” are essential works in movement to reframe the experience of living with mental illness. Here I’ve shared a few excerpts from the piece which you can read at the link in my bio. by @clairephillips0

Due to insurance delays and denials and under insurance, it is an uphill battle for many in Los Angeles to return post-fires. Your article provides useful information and inspiration.

Spent the afternoon with the magical Martin of @spellboundsky. After losing my altar of 30 years that I transported with me from Los Angeles to New York City to San Francisco and back in the Eaton Fire, I decided it was time to rise from the ashes, so to speak. Martin is as beautiful and bold and generous in person as he is in videos. I had no idea he would be helming the ship and available to share his bountiful insight and wisdom. If you are in Los Angeles, you must go to his shop on Santa Monica Boulevard in Silver Lake. An absolute celestial treasure! Thank you Martin and Mark for keeping it real, and for the excellent “scrying” tips. Louis and I will be back! by @clairephillips0

So proud of my brother's design @sparchs_la_sf for my Altadena rebuild. On January 8th, the day the Eaton Fire tragically stole the lives of seventeen of my West Altadena neighbors who never received prompt evacuation orders, I was astounded at the breadth of the disaster and profoundly disheartened. Late-era capitalism had finally taken too much. From day one, Stephen began designing a new home for me. It took weeks to recover from the initial shock, and now I am ready to return with a mid-century modern inspired passive, fire-resistant home. #denastrong #altadena A bungalow sized house clad in brown cement fire with double height windows and a butterfly metal roof outlined in the background by the Altadena foothills. by @clairephillips0

Recently I had the chance to have a powerful conversation with @mariabamfordcomedy about her brilliant memoir, Sure I’ll Join Your Cult. In the aftermath of the Eaton Fire, this interview feels like a bittersweet postscript to an era. After meeting through the vibrant community in Altadena we had the pleasure of orbiting each other for a while. We discuss our mothers, our favorite authors tackling nuanced and messy subjects of mental health, and our own memoirs.

In a prescient statement, she notes that “Comedy is not organizing,” and emphasizes the value of showing up for our neighbors. This is true now more than ever!
