I had a chance to check out the latest iteration of Beyond The Streets during a very brief visit to Paris last weekend, and I was absolutely blown away. Seeing original pieces by pioneers like Delta, Futura, and Zephyr alongside the newer vanguard really puts into perspective how much this art movement has grown and evolved without ever forgetting its roots in (and dialogue with) the urban blight of the late twentieth century. The exhibition continues to evolve with every version, and as a set designer and fabricator, I was often as intrigued by the authenticity of the presentation and the technical details of the immersive experience as I was by the art within. Rather than limiting presentation to white walls with carefully spaced canvasses hung perfectly at eye-level, BTS offers whole storefronts, elevated train tracks, and the types of alleyways that most normal people avoid unless they need to take an emergency leak, but most style writers can’t pass up a detour through. The catwalks on the upper level are reminiscent of accessing a forbidden rooftop in the city, offering glimpses of more tags, pieces, and other Easter eggs that you would never have realized were just out of view at ground level. The scale model trains are now rolling on tracks, so capturing a photo of them feels like trying to bench a real freight before it pulls away to the next destination. This is how this sort of art is best viewed and appreciated; the challenge of finding the right vantage point makes the sight that much more worthwhile. When you see the hundreds of photos of classic subway graffiti by Martha Cooper and Henry Chalfant, it helps you understand the thousands of hours of patience and plotting it took to capture them for the benefit of future generations. Huge shout out to @rogergastman and crew for putting together this massive installation and finally bringing a worthwhile museum experience to Paris. I’ve included a sampling of some of my favorite parts here, but there is so much more than I could possibly post. It’s definitely worth checking this show out if you have the chance. by @clams_rockefeller

Go pre-order the homie @isaac.fitzgerald ‘s new book! It’s a little bit of American history and a little bit of the American present and little bit of American folklore and a little bit of a meditation on growing older and how our relationships with ourselves and others change and it’s sort of about leaving home and also coming home… it’s about a lot of stuff. I mean it’s probably a couple hundred pages— he covers a lot of ground. Anyway I did some artwork for some of the promotional stuff so if you get your pre-order in today you might or might not get some of it. I don’t actually know exactly what’s happening with it. The important thing is the book is beautiful and I’m proud of my friend. (If you want to pre-order I’m sure there’s a link in his bio) by @clams_rockefeller

I got an email from the Beastie Boys mailing list about a five borough scavenger hunt for the anniversary release of To The Five Boroughs. The goal was to collect one card from each borough. Most were at record stores and I had the day off so I figured I’d take a shot at it. #beastieboys #tothefiveboroughs by @clams_rockefeller
