At the beginning of last month I took a long train ride from Chiang Mai to Phichit to see The Phichit Traditional Long-Boat Racing Festival (งานประเพณีแข่งขันเรือยาวชิงถ้วยพระราชทานจังหวัดพิจิตร/งานแข่งเรือยาววัดท่าหลวง) 2026. This takes place every year at Wat Tha Luang on the Nan River to compete for the Royal Trophy. I got hella sunburnt but 100% worth it and one of my most favorite things I've experienced thus far. Not a lot of tourists either, which was nice.

Reading about the history was just as fun as the event itself. The official, structured racing event at Wat Tha Luang was established around 1907 (B.E. 2450) by the monastery’s abbot and the ecclesiastical governor of Phichit, Phra Thammathassimunivong (Eiam). But it goes fahhhhh back boi. During ancient times; the Sukhothai and Ayutthaya periods, most logistics for trade, war and everything in between occured on the rivers. The long boats similar to the ones used in races today, were built primarily as naval vessels for national defense. During periods of peace naval soldiers utilized boat races as a practical way to maintain physical fitness, practice tactical maneuvers, and THEY STAYED READY FOH ACSHUN.

But as the years went on the need for river utu bangaz declined and the long-boat racing took on Buddhist influence or significance as well as being tied to agricultural lunar cycles. Traditionally, they coincided with the end of the Buddhist Rains Retreat and the Kathin robe-offering ceremonies on the 6th day of the waxing moon, 11th lunar month.
