On a Saturday morning, in April 2024, I received an email from @amy_galpin and I still remember the moment. I greatly admire her and her work and had wanted to meet her. She offered me an assignment for @moadmdc and @miamifreedomtower and I couldn’t believe my luck. I still can’t.
A year and a half have passed and my gratitude continues to grow, not only towards Amy but towards @mdc and @moadmdc
We have made over 400 portraits and interviews all over Dade County. Beautiful and generous people that have given us their time and have shared their stories.
We have cried with them, laughed with them and learned tremendously.
On Tuesday, at the ribbon ceremony, and on Wednesday we had the opportunity to celebrate and say thank you to many of the people who participated and to invite others that have not been included yet.

Thank you President Pumariega, Maryam Laguna Borrego, María Carla Chicuen and Amy Galpin for your generosity and for the opportunity of a lifetime. I cannot thank you enough.

Thank you Rebeca Hoffman, Isabela Villanueva, Gisselle Mestre, Rene Ramos, Bill Iverson, Giovanny Marin, Ángela Chaine, Jennifer Weinberg and Yady Rivero for working by my side and for making sure everything worked well. We have a lot of good stories and satisfactions!

Next week we continue photographing and recording because Miami has lots of stories that have not been told until now and we are ready for it.

Behind the scenes of Clara Toro: Everyday Joy 📷✨

With her lens, Clara Toro portrays the spirit of a changing Miami—photographing people in their homes, workplaces, and everyday moments that reflect both resilience and joy. This exhibition, her first solo museum presentation, combines earlier works with new work created in honor of the Freedom Tower’s 100-year anniversary.

Diaspora Vibe Cultural Arts Incubator, Inc. (DVCAI) invites audiences to experience its curatorial initiative, The Container Project, at DVCAI at Barry University. The exhibition includes a six-month run of activations and interactive works from November 20, 2025, to April 17, 2026.
Curated by DVCAI Founder, Curator Rosie Gordon-Wallace, based in Miami, and independent
curator and creative wellness strategist Breeana Thorne, based in Los Angeles, the trans-coastal, transcontinental, and Caribbean diasporic project poses the question,
“What’s in Your Container?”
The shipping container—a vessel of movement, transportation, and memory—serves as a lens through which we explore the personal and collective histories of containment. For Caribbean communities, containers and barrels symbolize both migration and support: they carry essentials, treasures, and the intangible legacies of family, culture, and resilience. These structures, physical and metaphorical, hold the weight of memory, trauma, care, and joy, reflecting the ways we navigate histories shaped by colonialism, displacement, and global exchange.
The works on view serve as sites of refuge—both physical and emotional. In response, artists turn inward, using their creative practice as containers for memory, grief, harmony, and regeneration. Students and visitors are invited to consider their own vessels of memory.
What’s in Your Container? How do we hold our histories? What structures sustain us? And, how can we transform grief and loss into acts of preservation, care, and renewed community?

Day 22: I had the good fortune of being in Suriname for museum night. Yesterday we visited three museums and a gallery. It was great to see all those places filled with people and to learn more about this interesting city. Our last stop was at @readytexartgallery, a beautiful, historic three story building, that hosts the work of artists from Suriname represented by the gallery and who graciously invited me to give a talk a week ago. I encourage you to visit their web page and to learn more about the artists they represent. Day 20: There are multiple options to cross the Suriname river, including public ferries (like the Suriname Ferry) and private services like pirogues and La Gabrielle, which is a car/passenger ferry. You can use these to travel across the river, with pirogues offering faster, more private transport and ferries providing more structured, scheduled options. Day 19: Saint Peter and Paul Cathedral was designed by Frans Harmes. Construction of the cathedral began January 30, 1883, in downtown Paramaribo. The cathedral interior is built of unpainted Surinamese cedar. Although it was consecrated in 1885, the towers were not completed until 1901.
In 2002 an extensive renovation was completed. With help of European Union-funding, formal restoration of the cathedral began in 2007 and, after three years, the church was re-opened on November 13, 2010.
In 2009 the gate to the cathedral turned 200 years old.
