They built a restaurant so popular that they rarely have leftovers. But success has a cost that customers don’t always see.

For Shawn and Ishicka, the couple behind Irie Jamminz in Kalamazoo, the journey began with a dream of bringing a taste of Jamaica to their community.

But life had other plans.

A daughter’s battle with cancer. Years of waiting. Walking away from a career in banking. And an opening day where almost everything seemed to go wrong.

Today, their restaurant is thriving. But behind the long lines and sold-out meals are two people navigating the delicate balance between building a dream and being present for the family they’re building it for.

This conversation reminded me that success isn’t just about what we achieve. It’s also about what it asks of us.

Episode 7 of The Conscious Lane is now live on YouTube.

IT'S HERE! 🎙️

Yesterday, I shared a glimpse of Kayla Kilgore's journey. Today, you get to hear the whole story!

From starting over multiple times to building Good Soil All Natural Juice, Kayla shares the lessons, challenges, and experiences that have shaped her journey as an entrepreneur.

But this conversation goes beyond building a business. We talk about faith, family, community, the courage to begin, and why sometimes, the best thing you can do is run towards failure.

There's so much to take away from this one, and I hope it inspires you as much as it inspired me.

**Episode 6 of The Conscious Lane is officially LIVE on YouTube!**

“I was poor yesterday. But guess what? I’m strong today.”

Marvinetta reminds us that our circumstances are part of our story, but they don't have to be the end of it. From choosing a different narrative to celebrating an 87-year-old woman dancing like nobody’s watching, this is a conversation about agency, joy, and living fully.

What does choosing a different story look like for you?
