POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
One of my favorite bookstores and coffee shops combined. Pass Books and Cat Island Coffee. @passbooksmississippi @catislandcoffeehouse They’ve flown books in especially for us and for tonight’s book signing. Thanks to them we will be hanging out this evening greeting anyone who shows up between 5:30-7:00 pm. Very exciting. The rest of the books are on a boat heading to the US and they will be available in a few weeks. Not many bookstores offer a view this good. by @classicalshindig

We welcome the brilliant Clive Aslet to New Orleans. Not only have we followed him in Country Life, The Telegraph but also on Instagram. A journalist and architectural historian, Clive has referred to his career as a “professional ramble’.” I wish I rambled like that. He spent 13 years as editor of Country Life, has written heaps of books on English architecture and history and now has a podcast. I am thrilled to pieces that he is coming to New Orleans next week to discuss his latest book, King Charles III: 40 Years of Architecture, which is the topic of his presentation. Books will be for sale. The ESU is hosting him with a dinner and lecture on Wednesday the 14th of October. I have some information to share about the event. If anyone is inclined, we are welcoming him with a patron reception at the house the night before the presentation. @cliveaslet @esu_us by @classicalshindig

There’s a new place in town and it’s looking like a success. In high school, the location was the site of a really fun bar called Melius’s. It seemed to be one of the big French Quarter hangouts aside from Pat O’Brien’s and other savory sites. Well, Alex and Miles Pincus have teamed up with Neal Bodenheimer to create the coolest oyster bar in the French Quarter. I love it here. It’s called Holy Water. It’s stylish, vibrant and has some really good food and cocktails. There are all sorts of rooms and really great balcony overlooking Conti Street. I can’t wait to go back. Even the two greats at The Times Picayune were there with big smiles on their faces; food writer Ian McNulty and photographer Chris Granger. I am super psyched for the Pincuses and this new endeavor. @holywater.nola @ianmcnultynola by @classicalshindig

Friends Dress Alike! Even European travelers do it. You see it everywhere. Two friends don’t plan on wearing the same outfit but then they meet up for coffee or some event and they’re dressed alike. The tough part is sneaking a quick photo when I see it. This September, Spain was filled with them. #friendsdressalike by @classicalshindig

I am back home now but wow, Madrid! I love you. When I was 20 and studying abroad in Valencia, Spain, I traveled to Madrid twice. It felt a bit cold. People were closed off. Not “Animado.” The city was rundown. There was smog. Lots of car exhaust and it felt overcrowded. Well now what a change. It’s clean, vibrant, dynamic and fashionable. I could not get enough of it. Fountains, parks, squares, plazas, nightlife, cool cafes, great food, and really exceptional design. Plus, great style. If you go, get dinner at el Paraguas and have drinks at Manero. @santomaurohotel @philipjamestravel @elparaguasrestaurante @barmanero taken in Santo Mauro, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Madrid by @classicalshindig

Well no doubt about it, Valldemossa and Deia are two wonderful cities in mallorca. I’d go back in a heartbeat but if you rent a car it’s hard to find a place to park and if you go by train, car or bus you’re kind of stranded. Despite the two hour wait for a taxi it was worth every minute. Perfect weather too. by @classicalshindig

Finally made it to Valldemossa, Mallorca and to the monastery where Georges Sand and Frederic Chopin lived in 1839. About two years ago, Quinn convinced our local piano group to learn Chopin preludes. He composed many of them in this same spot. We each took on four or five of them each and spent hours upon hours practicing them until the final day arrived. This week we viewed the salon and the garden where the composer and the writer set up camp. We experienced some strikingly treacherous hairpin curves and I don’t know how they did this climb with mules and consumption. One of the Pleyel pianos is still there from the period. I think we might have to perform them when we get back home. We ended the day with a three hour lunch of great Spanish food and wine. Thanks to all who made this happen taken in Celda De Chopin by @classicalshindig

First time I came here I thought it was a tourist trap but Palma is shockingly beautiful. Yeah. A lot of tourists. But they seem to blend into the general population. We’ve met people living there from all over the world. But there is a reason for coming to Mallorca. In the mid 19th century Frederic Chopin composed many of his preludes in Valldemossa. Our piano club decided to meet here and give a concert. We’ve all learned preludes. There are 24 in total and eight pianists. Each of us took on a few of them and were here to play them First stage is the city and then the country. taken in Palma De Mallorca, Spain by @classicalshindig

I lived abroad in Spain in 1986 to learn the language. I went to Madrid on two occasions but hardly saw much. Never saw el Escorial royal palace. I wanted to stay in the city but Quinn insisted on doing an excursion to see the palace. Well damn! I’m glad I agreed. What an incredible place. The palace itself is a remarkable work of design and brilliance. The library ceiling was inspired The Sistine Chapel. The whole palace takes the expression “They don’t build them like they used to” to a whole new level. by @classicalshindig

Can’t believe it’s been 40 years since I was last in Madrid. I cannot get enough of this city. So chic. Just here one day and already I’m thinking about how we can get back. This city is so alive. taken in Madrid, Spain by @classicalshindig

Yeah. I know. Two nights in a city is barely scratching the surface but one of my oldest friends, David Ebner, lives here and I needed to pay a visit before our group met in Spain. What a wonderful European capital. It is incredibly relaxed. The city has incredible charm, fascinating architecture, and a good bit of elegant decay like my own city. If you come here stay at the Hotel Das Amoreiras. It’s small and charming. And the area is shady, affluent and safe. People here enjoy the climate and take advantage of it by living life outdoors. I hope to return one day. @hoteldasamoreiras taken in Lisbon, Portugal by @classicalshindig
