Adam and I made the most of our 3.5 week free time while the kids were having a blast at camp.

We went out most nights, spent time with friends, traveled to Colorado where we hiked in Rocky Mountain National Park, dog sat for two perfect Golden Retrievers in Fort Collins, and went to a sublimely hippie concert at Mishawaka, a venue next to a rushing river and tucked into a canyon.

We repainted the girls rooms in their chosen colors, organized the house and went through the kids art to put some up in frames and order our annual Artkive book, enjoyed his-and-hers personal shopping appointments at Nordstrom, ate out a lot, got back into our exercise routine, and went to see movies. In theaters!

We were so relaxed and happy to welcome them back (along with 3 Israeli counselors who needed a host family for a few days).

Bess graduated from Highland Park Elementary - Austin TX on Thursday. She has been blessed with so many wonderfully supportive teachers, administrators, caregivers, coaches, and friends throughout her elementary years.

From starting Kindergarten in 2020 as part of a little Covid pod of 5 classmates from Escuelita del Alma, going to 1st grade at Ridgetop School Community Group, and then 2nd - 5th at Highland Park, there are so many fantastic people who have supported her and us as a family.

At her school, each graduating student gives a little farewell speech, and this was hers:

"My name is Bess Holzband, and I am headed to Lamar Middle School. My favorite Highland Park Elementary School memory is The Greek Plays and finally getting to be in the play as a narrator. I am most proud of getting 10th overall in dance, being big sister to Juni, and getting to be a narrator in The Greek Plays.

In the future, I hope to be a dancer because I express my feelings a lot through movement. I am most likely to dance my heart out on stage. When my classmates think of me, I want them to say I was kind, funny, caring, and helpful. I am glad and sad to leave HP. I've had so much fun since 2nd grade when I started here at HP. "

Day trips to Glenwood Hot Springs, Penny Hot Springs, and Hanging Lake hike.

Skied in a tee shirt, kids got poles, became obsessed with Scattegories, came back in one piece. by @classicbart

Happy 11th birthday to Bess and happy 47th birthday to me. We both got the best gifts ever — the feeling of being loved and accepted and even cherished for exactly who we are.

Bess celebrated with ice cream sandwiches at school, sushi for dinner, a spa & karaoke party, and a roller skating “date.”

This year, Bess has been more active than ever. She continued with her annual tradition of JCC swim team, URJ Greene Family Camp (4th year in a row for both), and started some new things too — a hip hop dance team Dance Discovery of Austin and the Highland Park Elementary - Austin TX archery team. She has healed mentally and physically so well from her burn.

I celebrated with dinner L'Oca d'Oro, brunch Chez Zee American Bistro with some of my favorite family members (Robin Star + Marsha Lichtman), shopping for bedroom furniture with Adam Holzband, and dinner with my dear Jennifer Brener Seay + Michael Seay.

This year, I consistently lifted weights 2-3 days a week with Amy B Cohen, Christina Gorczynski, + Adam, continued my 2x a week pilates class with Heilla Jenkins Lain, and took a mosaics class Laguna Gloria Art School. In addition, Ive enjoyed my “not a book club” meetings with Kelly Levy + Bea. Finally, I’ve enjoyed some great concerts (highlights were Phish + Jungle), trips with girlfriends (Rachel Frank Lanman, Jaclyn Rubin, + Jillian Levy), family trips to France + Colorado, and so much more.

This world is a mess, but we are finding joy in whatever ways we can. ❤️ by @classicbart
