Love this refreshingly relaxed photo of Eva Marie Saint and Cary Grant, boarding their plane for Chicago as they headed (but not with Northwest! ✈️) for location shooting for North by Northwest.

🎬 Seen as surprising casting at the time, Saint excelled in her role as the coolly captivating and enigmatic Eve Kendall.

A tale of two pregnancies: Eva Marie had only recently delivered her second child when she started filming the Hitchcock classic. Final photo shows her receiving her Best Supporting Actress Oscar for On the Waterfront, her film debut. Two days later she gave birth to her first child.

A very Happy 💯 Birthday to Eva Marie Saint today!

🎞 They had us at “Cary Grant”…Excerpt from the original trailer for 1963’s Charade, packed to the gunwales with romance, comedy and suspense just as it promised. Audrey Hepburn and Cary bringing their usual charm and sharing an easy rapport both on and offscreen. Sterling support from (an against type) Walter Matthau, George Kennedy and James Coburn. Escapist entertainment that still delivers nearly 60 years later! 💫

🎂 Little Archie Leach, born on this date in 1904 in Bristol. As a boy he would look to find an escape from his increasingly unhappy and lonely childhood. Trips to the cinema ignited a love for the movies, then time assisting a teacher at the local theatre introduced him to the backstage camaraderie and excitement - inspiring him to pursue the life of a performer.

🎭 What an extraordinary life journey and career he ultimately made for himself as Archie Leach (making it to Broadway) and then Cary Grant!
☁️ “The Man From Dream City”, as Pauline Kael described him…

💫 Stills from just a few of his career highlights, and a photo of him celebrating his 51st birthday with Irene Dunne and a cake from the Lux Radio Theatre.

This week in 1955, To Catch a Thief made its theatrical debut, with premiere celebrations in Philadelphia (August 2), Los Angeles (August 3), and its official world premiere in New York City on August 4. 💎

Directed by Alfred Hitchcock and starring Cary Grant and Grace Kelly, the film captivated audiences with its dazzling French Riviera setting, sparkling romance, and unforgettable chemistry.

Earlier that spring, while promoting the film at the 1955 Cannes Film Festival, Grace participated in a Paris Match photo session at the Prince's Palace in Monaco, where she met Prince Rainier III for the first time—a meeting that would change the course of her life forever.

More than 70 years later, To Catch a Thief remains a perfect blend of suspense, romance, and timeless Hollywood elegance.

Happy Anniversary to this Hitchcock classic. 🎬💙 by @classiccarygrant

✨ Happy 100th Birthday Marilyn! ✨ How loved you are by so many!

💫 It’s a joy to see the wave of tributes and appreciation for Marilyn’s life and career. The new exhibitions and books. The gatherings of fans. A welcome step away from the sensationalism.

🍰 Looking forward to attending the @marilynremembered birthday celebration today in LA.

🎥 Cary Grant re Robert Redford’s acting career: “He’s so good looking. He doesn’t have to worry about it now, but the day will come when he’ll have to decide where he’s going. He’s made some of the right decisions so far.” And so it continued! Carving a career for himself that transcended being the matinee idol of the day. An Oscar-winning director. Founder of the Sundance Film Institute. Environmentalist.

⭐️ So many films to choose from, my personal favourite is Barefoot in the Park. Honourable mentions to Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Way We Were and Ordinary People.

🎶 I recently read that Redford’s use of Pachelbel’s Canon in D to such great effect in Ordinary People revived interest in a piece that had become somewhat obscure by 1980. It soon became a favourite, especially at weddings (my own, included).

An exuberant Cary Grant meets the press with his wife Dyan Cannon and their infant daughter Jennifer, ahead of the new family’s voyage from San Francisco to Southampton in the summer of 1966. Ultimately heading for Grant’s Bristol hometown and introducing his baby daughter to his mother Elsie, now a grandmother at age 89.

🎥 This weekend, “Cary Comes Home” again - as the city celebrates his cinematic legacy and Bristol roots in its biennial Festival. The theme for 2024 is Cary Grant’s early acrobatic training and how his physical prowess enhanced his onscreen presence in both comedy and action roles.

🎪 Screenings, panel discussions, guided walking tours and even a gala finale screening of To Catch a Thief in a circus tent with live performances, there’s so much to enjoy as @carycomeshome !!!

🎬 Friday November 29th-Sunday December 1st

(Having enjoyed the festival from afar in past years via the online talks and interviews, I’m so excited to be able to attend this year - whilst, just like Cary all those years ago, travelling from California to introduce our daughter to her paternal grandparents in England. Good stuff, as he would say!)

✨🥂 “Here’s to you”! Cary Grant’s charming (what else?!) song to usher in another New Year. The B-side to his Christmas Lullaby record, inspired by his love for his baby daughter Jennifer, released in 1967 and in collaboration with Cary’s dear friend Peggy Lee.

🎶 Overleaf: my radio copy of the single.

💫 All this to say, HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! 💫. by @classiccarygrant

⭐️ The one and only! Remembering Cary Grant for all the joy his films have brought so many of us for all these years.

✨ A delight! For me, it’s The Awful Truth, The Philadelphia Story, Bachelor Knight, Indiscreet, To Catch a Thief, North by Northwest …
✍️ Editing to add some omissions! (My baby was asleep in my arms and I dashed this post out whilst I had the chance!) An Affair to Remember, His Girl Friday, Bringing Up Baby, The Bishop’s Wife, Notorious, Mr Blandings Builds His Dream House, Penny Serenade, Suspicion and Charade … and a whole load more. Basically everything apart from The Pride and the Passion!

🎬 From Archie Leach to Cary Grant… what a journey! So looking forward to absorbing all 4 episodes of the new miniseries “Archie”, exploring his turbulent Bristol childhood, the impetus it gave him to escape and achieve - and his lifelong journey to find peace within himself. 🎭 Four actors play Archie/Cary from young childhood to adulthood: Dainton Anderson, Oaklee Pendergast, Calam Lynch and Jason Isaacs. Laura Aikman plays Dyan Cannon and from the glimpses of her performance in the trailer she has captured Cannon’s mannerisms and distinctive laugh to a tee! 💫 With Dyan Cannon and daughter Jennifer Grant amongst the producers, and their memoirs inspiring much of the writing by Jeff Pope, this promises to be insightful. Jason Isaacs has acknowledged there’s only one Cary Grant, and his focus is on the “flawed and damaged Archie Leach”. When the production was announced last summer, Jennifer Grant explained how she required the actor playing her father to have qualities similar to his enquiring mind and humour.

📺 “Archie” premiers on ITVX Thursday 23rd November in the U.K.
Britbox will be streaming the first 2 episodes in the US and Canada on December 7th, the final 2 episodes are available on the 14th.
