Two whole years! I can’t believe Classics Mistake turns two today! I am so grateful for all your love and support for this account. I have made so many wonderful friends through doing this and I can’t thank you all enough.

The past year has seen some big developments for Classics Mistake. It was the first year of my PhD - the start of a wonderful new chapter in my Classics journey. I started doing school visits - bringing Classics to students of all ages who otherwise may never have known it existed. I created Classics Adventures - a YouTube series with accompanying worksheets for teachers and educators (more of this to come very soon). It was also a big year for Classics with The Odyssey film coming out and to celebrate this I explored The Odyssey in Objects and My Top 10 Classics Mistakes in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey (with posts 8, 9 and 10 coming soon). And finally, it was the beginning of Trojan War Tuesdays - telling the story of the Trojan War in short segments each week!

To celebrate Classic Mistake’s birthday, here are some of my favourite Classics photos from the past year! From the Acropolis at sunrise to the Trojan horse, it truly has been a wonderful year of Classics!

Thank you all so much for your support! I can’t wait to bring you more Classics mistakes and Trojan War Tuesdays over the next year!

As a Classics student, you may think I spent my childhood reading anything and everything to do with the ancient world. However, that’s a Classics mistake!

In fact, my Classics friends were so horrified that I had not read the Percy Jackson series that one Christmas I was presented with this wonderful collection of books. I had read the first book during sixth form as my Classics teacher recommended it but my friends were definitely right, I needed to read the rest.

Rick Riordan tells the wonderful tale of Percy Jackson, a young boy who learns he is the son of a god and a mortal woman. He is sent to a summer camp for half-bloods and learns what it means to be part of the world of Greek myth. He goes on quests with his trusty friends Annabeth and Grover and faces many a monster and plenty of immortals on his travels.

So, this summer, I thought it was finally time to read the second book. Percy Jackson and The Sea of Monsters involves Percy and his friends trying to rescue Grover from the Cyclops’ cave, passing Circe, Scylla and Charybdis on the way. If you watched Nolan’s Odyssey this summer, these characters will be very familiar to you and indeed, Percy’s travels are much like Odysseus’ (well without making quite as many idiotic decisions).

I would highly recommend this charming book to anyone who fell in love with The Odyssey this summer and if television is more your cup of tea, then Disney has made an excellent series (@percyseries ). It may be a children’s book but it’s one of those stories that appeals to old and young alike.

And while it is a great reimagining of many tales from Greek mythology, perhaps what is most applaudable is how Riordan reminds us all that being different is not a problem. Percy has dyslexia and ADHD but Riordan explains that’s because his brain is ready to read Ancient Greek and fight monsters! And this becomes all the more poignant when you learn that the story began as a bedtime story told to Riordan’s son, Haley, who also has dyslexia and ADHD, to help him feel less alone! What a wonderful use of Classics!

Disney’s Hercules - A star is born âïžđŸŒŸđŸ’«

I’m so happy I had the chance to see Disney’s Hercules at Theatre Royal Drury Lane for a second time before it ends on the 5th September. Last time I went to see this show, I focused on my top three Classics mistakes but as the show is coming to a close, I felt it was only right that this time I reflect upon the broader meaning and impact of the show before the cast take their final bows next weekend.

So, what does Hercules mean for Classics?

Well, I think it’s a Classics mistake to say that Classics is not important or irrelevant when I’m sat watching a Saturday matinee and I can’t see a spare seat. Disney’s Hercules on the West End has shown the power of Greek myths and their ability to captivate our attention. Maybe this is not the most accurate representation of Hercules but maybe that does not matter, it’s a Disney production after all. Perhaps what is more important is that it is precisely shows like this which demonstrate that Classics is not boring at all but can be lots of fun!

And indeed, Hercules is incredibly entertaining. It is a spectacle to watch with big ensemble numbers, dazzling costumes, impressive set design and colourful props, not to mention the talented cast who bring the story to life. The audience laugh, smile and perhaps shed a tear or two as we watch young Herc discover what it means to be a hero.

This not only helps to challenge stereotypes surrounding Classics but it helps to expose more people to Greek mythology. Even if this inspires just a handful of people to study Classics at school or university or even read one of those fabulous Greek myth retellings or go watch Hadestown next, then this show has truly helped Classics go the distance!

It is a shame that Hercules has to come to an end but it’s fair to say that a star has been born and will shine brightly long after the curtains come down for the very last time. Thank you @herculesonstage for bringing the ancient world to life in such a wonderful way.

Spoilers ahead 🚹

I can’t believe it’s been over two months since The Odyssey was released in cinemas and after a short break, my top ten Classics mistakes in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey is back and we’re jumping straight back in with the underworld scene!

I want to begin by admitting that the way Nolan approached the underworld scene was actually fairly impressive in that he had Odysseus summon the spirits rather than visit the underworld itself.

However, Nolan removed so many wonderful encounters from this scene and instead added Sinon in (who is not even in Homer’s Odyssey!) I just wish we had kept Odysseus’ mother rather than having the storyline of Sinon who goes to Troy instead of Antinous and dies in the Trojan horse scene. All in all, the scene felt more like a horror movie than the incredibly moving and emotional scene from Homer’s poem.

What did you think of the underworld scene? Next time, we’ll be looking at famous Sea Peoples who were mentioned a lot in Nolan’s film!
