Speaking on CapeTalk’s Weekend Breakfast with Sara-Jayne Makwala King, our maestro, Kutlwano Masote, spoke about his commitment to broadening access to orchestral music and bringing together artists whose work audiences might not typically associate with a symphony orchestra. “These are people that you don’t usually associate with an orchestra, but to be able to bring this dialogue […] we also love it as orchestral people, and audiences are like a child in a toy shop because these wonderful worlds come together in the most magical ways, and the storytelling becomes on a different level,” he explained. For Wouter Kellerman, this collaboration is an opportunity to hear his own compositions reimagined for flute, band and symphony orchestra. Reflecting on the experience, he shared: “Symphony orchestras are just incredibly beautiful institutions. With my background actually being classical, it’s a full circle moment for me to actually have my music orchestrated.” This Friday, join us at the breathtaking halls of Norval Foundation in Cape Town together with Telkom to experience this unique meeting of musical worlds as Kellerman performs alongside the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Mr Masote. “For me, the narrative comes from the feeling behind the music and the journey we take the audience on. People are increasingly listening across genre boundaries, and I've always believed that music has the power to build bridges and connect people with different sensibilities and backgrounds.” Speaking to Eyewitness News in a recent interview, Wouter Kellerman reflected on the philosophy behind his music, a belief he has demonstrated through collaborations with some of South Africa’s most prominent musical talents, including Makhadzi, and Zakes Bantwini and Nomcebo Zikode on the Grammy-winning “Bayethe”. His work with the Soweto Gospel Choir and Ndlovu Youth Choir further exemplifies his commitment to bringing diverse voices and musical traditions together. Kellerman’s collaborations extend internationally, including work with Indian composer Ricky Kej and, more recently, Japanese cellist Eru Matsumoto and Indian vocalist Chandrika Tandon on Triveni, which earned him his third Grammy Award in 2025. This Friday, the international award-winning flautist ascends the Classics on Turf stage along with the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra, under the baton of Kutlwano Masote at the Norval Foundation for an evening of musical and transcultural connection. Music, dance, and poetry serve as vessels of cultural wisdom and living memory, transmitting stories across generations, and this past weekend, these art forms formed the centrepiece of a tribute to Sol Plaatje and Kgosi Luka Jantjie. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Vusi Mahlasela, one of South Africa’s most celebrated musical voices, who performed with the Northern Cape Symphony Orchestra. The programme also showcased the vibrant talents of the Northern Cape Youth Choir, Sol Plaatje University Choir, the !Xunkhwesa Primary and High School groups, Amandla Dança Teatro ZA, Dithito Tsa Setso, poets Siza Nkosi, AfriKanQueen, Kunakho Mazamisa, and singer Tsholofelo Mokobe, among others. Together, their contributions continue to reflect the cultural depth of Kimberley, the wider Northern Cape, and Southern Africa’s heritage as a whole. Their performances honoured, with distinction, two figures whose lives and legacies continue to merit recognition across generations. #SolPlaatje #KgosiLukaJantjie #Kimberley #ClassicsOnTurf #ThaboMbekiFoundation by @classicsonturf
A meaningful engagement with our history requires us to look beyond names and dates. It calls for an understanding of the lives individuals led, the decisions they made, and the circumstances that influenced their contributions to society. At our Heritage concert this past weekend in Kimberley, presented in partnership with the Thabo Mbeki Foundation, we gathered to honour Rre Solomon Tshekisho Plaatje and Kgosi Luka Jantjie. The event provided an opportunity to reflect on their respective contributions to South African history and to emphasise the importance of preserving their legacies. We extend our sincere appreciation to Dr Zamani Saul, Premier of the Northern Cape; Kgosigolo Tumo Jantjie; and Professor Yunus Ballim, who delivered the keynote lecture. We also acknowledge our Patron, Zwelibanzi Mntambo, for leading the proceedings, Dr William Steenkamp for delivering the vote of thanks, and all contributors who played a key role in the success of this Heritage concert. We express our gratitude to all who joined us in Kimberley to reflect on these histories. The lives of Plaatje and Jantjie continue to provide significant perspectives on issues of land, identity, political thought, and the preservation of African heritage, and maintaining public awareness of their histories ensures that their contributions remain accessible to future generations. We thank our speakers, partners, and guests for their participation in this gathering. #SolPlaatje #KgosiLukaJantjie #Kimberley #ClassicsOnTurf #ThaboMbekiFoundation by @classicsonturf
Tomorrow, we gather in Kimberley to reflect on the lives and lasting impact of two figures who still inspire us today. As our maestro puts it, “Sol Plaatje and Kgosi Luka Jantjie might not have written music, but we are celebrating them in the way we know best as artists.” Through art, we engage with histories significant to our understanding of South Africa. Their lives remind us that the freedoms and cultural inheritance we hold today connect to the work and sacrifices of those who came before us. We invite you to join us for this profound and necessary gathering of music, art, conversation and cultural connection! Admission is free. Date: 24 October 2026 Time: 16:00 Venue: Mittah Seperepere Convention Centre, Kimberley #SolPlaatje #KgosiLukaJantjie #Kimberley #ClassicsOnTurf #ThaboMbekiFoundation by @classicsonturf
