Before 2026/2027 Rome Prize Winner Taji Ra'oof Nahl (TR7) departs for his residency at the @amacademyrome, on Aug. 25th, he is opening the archive to the public square for an interactive curatorial excavation.

Co-produced by the Parkway Central @freelibrary, Channel TR7, and The Inquisitive Outsider, Inside Vault Seven, Volume Two: Next Stop—Rome, Italy transforms the Skyline Room into a responsive visual almanac. Moving far beyond the static boundaries of traditional artist talks and academic slide decks, Nahl presents a multi-screen, simultaneous video installation where the audience is empowered to disrupt the visual field.

Freeze any projection at will to unlock live, unscripted oral historiography—deconstructing the scene’s historical roots, collaborative network, and place within Nahl’s counter-surveillance thesis on J. Edgar Hoover’s Black Desk.

This visual preview is scored by the electronic/experimental soundscapes of legendary producer and composer @HPrizm, whose sonic architecture anchors Nahl’s exploration of preparation, genealogical lineage, and archival passage.

The evening also honors the foundational mentorship of Nahl’s uncle, Yahya Abdul Rashid, whose support underwrites TR7's ongoing evolution from Philadelphia to Rome.

For researchers, curators, and enthusiasts of avant-garde performance, social practice, and institutional critique: join us in painting the room with memory, dialogue, and curiosity.

The institution said no. She built a door.

When the grant falls through or the gallery passes, most artists stall. Textile artist DUWENAVUE JOHNSON — @sante_artxstitch.art to her people — keeps sewing. She self-funds monumental installations and takes them straight to the community. No permission slip. No waiting room. The result isn't a compromise; it's a collective dream, authored by the people it's for.

Here's the part the art world keeps missing: Sante is a federal flag-room embroiderer. The United States government trusts her hands with its symbols. Her work sits in the V&A. And she *still* doesn't wait for the institution to say yes — because she figured out the institution was never the destination. Just an option.

That's not a pivot. That's the whole history of how marginalized people built culture in this country: manufacturing their own infrastructure to prove they exist, letting the community and the available resources dictate the scale. The gatekeepers think they're guarding the only door. Sante just builds her own.

So the question for the rest of us cultural workers: are we facilitating the dream, or just guarding somebody else's blueprints?
