Just got home from Alaska and I killed a Mountain Goat. The goat decoy suit worked perfectly allowing me to stalk from 70 to 45 yards while in full view of the bedded goat. It never spooked. The full story is complicated and I just can’t explain it all here, but it involves thick fog, splitting up (staying in sight) with David @stikineguideservice, me mis-identifying the goat, a good stalk, and one of the scariest three hour segments of my life. After the shot the goat slid down an ice sheet into a near vertical crevice, plummeting downward until it became lodged between ice and rock - just feet before an 800 foot drop. All I can say is that LEGENDARY @meateater cameraman @dirtmyth saved the day in the recovery. Absolutely incredible place. And I can’t say enough good things about David and Cean Benitz @stikineguideservice. David’s a veteran Alaska woodsman and Bowhunter, and I call him a friend. Making sorghum molasses with @villineswillard. He was taught how to do this by his father. They still plant the same sorghum seed his ancestors used in the 1830s when they arrived in the Ozarks. The whole process of cutting the cane, shucking the leaves, milling it, and boiling it down takes upwards of 15 to 20 hours a batch. Making molasses is truly an art. The little “looking glass” is a special tool designed to measure sugar and water content of the molasses. The only ingredient in molasses is sorghum cane juice. ***Merle Haggard’s song “Grandma Harp” states her maiden name was “Zon Villines” and she was from Newton County, Arkansas - she was one of Willard’s great aunts (or close). Willard was on the first Bear Grease episode about the formation of the Buffalo River. Mules name is Grasshopper, I’ll tell you why later. This idea was a combination of spear fishing knowledge (@stevenrinella) meeting bear hunting desire (Clay). It ended up being a solid strategy for stalking coastal bears - totally quiet and they think you’re a seal. We did have one bear smell us and spook. @dirtmyth and I were able to get into 12 yards of this bear for a shot. The idea and spot was Steve’s - #hattip.
