My cousin recently sent me pictures of a man he hung out with while on vacation who looked just like my father. Even dressed like him! 😂 Seeing those pictures made me want to share something about my dad.

I was adopted when I was finally able to walk. Before that, I was in a foster home in the ’70s with a lovely white family who didn’t know how to comb Black people’s hair. 😂

My mother and father adopted me, but they separated soon afterward. It was my mother who initially chose me, but this man chose to remain my father. No matter what happened between him and my mother, for over 40 years, he never stopped being my dad. He never treated me as less than. He never looked at me like I wasn’t his.

One of the most precious gifts he gave me was his last name: MILES. I treasure that name. It’s my legacy, but more importantly, it’s his legacy. I hold it close, and I want to make that name proud.

When I was in Afghanistan, I started looking deeper into the history of the MILES name and learned of a connection to royalty. Yes, it was a name passed down through slavery, but learning about that royal connection meant something to me—because my father was a king.

He taught me what it means to be a father and how that bond can be stronger than blood. He taught me that when you take responsibility for someone, you embrace them as your own.

With everything going on in my life, I believe my cousin sending me these pictures came from God—a reminder that I’m doing the right thing.

That cousin is from my dad’s side of the family, and he has never treated me as less than or as though I wasn’t family. To this day, that entire side of the family has held me closer than blood, and I love them very much.

There’s no big point I’m trying to make. I just needed to get this out.
