7 years ago I founded @cleanthisbeachup on the belief that if one person can make a difference, collective effort can change the world. 🥹💙

Today we celebrate what started as an idea and turned into a movement 🌊 122,000 lbs of trash removed from our shorelines and over 12,000 volunteers inspired.

This journey is proof that individual action does matter, and when a community comes together, the impact is unstoppable.

While doing a cleanup with @cleanthisbeachup a family of volunteers found this young mangrove growing from an aluminum can amongst the rest of the trash washed up along the rocks of the Macarthur causeway.

Everyone present was visibly moved. This little mangrove tree gave a mix of emotions, displaying the extensive damage done by pollution while also showcasing natures ability to adapt and overcome.

We wanted to remove it from the can but the mangrove’s roots had completely filled the inside so we had to cut the can off of it. After carefully removing the can the mangrove was safely returned to the same shore line it was supposed to root in before pollution intervened.

Today, Miami-Dade County made a decision that will be felt far beyond one piece of land.

Commissioners voted 9–3 to approve Kelly Tractor’s proposed headquarters outside the Urban Development Boundary, on a roughly 246-acre site west of Miami-Dade that includes more than 140 acres of sensitive wetlands.

The Urban Development Boundary exists for a reason: to contain urban sprawl and protect the wetlands, agricultural lands, water resources and Everglades that make South Florida possible.

And this isn’t simply about one development. It’s about precedent.

Commissioner @daniellecohenhiggins has repeatedly warned that allowing projects to move outside the UDB through individual exceptions could lead to a “plethora” of similar applications and ultimately cause the Urban Development Boundary to cease to exist. Today, she voted NO. She was right to hold the line as everyone else should have.

So thank you, Commissioner @daniellecohenhiggins @micky4dade @commissionervickillopez for standing up for our wetlands and for consistently voting to protect the boundary.

And to the rest of the Miami-Dade County Commission: Shame on you.

You were entrusted with protecting this county, not just facilitating its growth. Our wetlands are not empty land waiting to be paved on.

We can build another headquarters somewhere else. We cannot build another Everglades.

The Urban Development Boundary was created for a reason. Today, you chose to cross it.

Our wetlands are not for sale.

🌱 Mangroves are more than trees along the shoreline.

They are nurseries for marine life, habitat for coastal birds, natural filters, carbon-storing ecosystems, and one of our first lines of defense against storms and erosion.

Quietly rooted where land meets sea, mangroves protect biodiversity, our coastlines, and our communities.

Standing on a stage talking about trash, sharks, legislation and the power of showing up. And watching people in that room nod, lean in, and see themselves in the story… that’s everything.

Conservation isn’t reserved for scientists or specialists, it belongs to every single one of us. No matter your background, your age, or where you’re from, you have a voice. The only question is whether you choose to use it. You don’t need a title or a degree. You just need the courage to show up.

Two bonnethead sharks. Two very different stories. ⚠️ Viewer discretion advised.

My first encounter with a shark wasn’t while diving— it was during a beach cleanup. That day changed me. It reminded me that the biggest threats to sharks aren’t always what people think. Sometimes, it’s the fishing line left behind. The trash we ignore. The choices we make when no one is watching. @cleanthisbeachup

This Shark Week and Shark Awareness Month, remember to not just celebrate sharks, but show up for them. Conservation isn’t something that only happens in labs or underwater. It starts with ordinary people choosing to care.
