In an upcoming episode of The Bridge to U of Podcast, my guest shared how early in his career, he was so focused on the numbers that he could not always see the broader impact of the work.

That was not a flaw. It was how he was wired to process information.

His analytical strength helped him excel technically. But a leader at a major consulting firm saw something more in him. That leader helped him understand the importance of connecting the data to the people, the message, and the outcome.

Over time, he strengthened the communication and leadership skills that did not come as naturally at first.

Today, he uses both.

He can analyze the numbers and communicate why they matter.

He can manage the project and influence the people involved.

He can bring technical expertise into the room and lead with clarity.

As an HBCU graduate and now a successful business owner, his story reflects the gap I continue to see:

Talent may open the door, but communication readiness determines how effectively we lead, influence, and create impact once we enter the room.

This is why technical preparation must be paired with communication, leadership, storytelling, and relationship-building skills.

You did not build a business to become its hostage.

You built the business for freedom.

But now every decision, client issue, team question, approval, and emergency still comes back to you.

I mentored her for a year. Then, she asked to pay me. Now, she’s closing three year deals. 🎉🎉🎉

You will not go back to the old version of yourself.

Not after you learn to trust your voice.

Not after you grow in confidence.

Not after you learn how to negotiate with clarity, steadiness, and self-respect.

When I began mentoring her, she was a recent graduate, and an entrepreneur building her own business.

She already had vision.

She already had drive.

What she needed was space to grow into her voice, strengthen her confidence, and learn how to lead herself through important decisions.

Over the course of a year, I watched that growth happen.

She became more grounded.

More confident.

More willing to advocate for herself without becoming defensive or combative.

And then she signed a three-year hockey contract through a peaceful, respectful, win-win negotiation.

That matters to me.

Because mentoring is not only about helping someone secure an opportunity.

It is about helping them become the kind of person who can enter that opportunity differently.

You can lead differently at any age and any stage.

All that is required is that you remain open, teachable, reflective, and willing to grow.

This work is not for people who are committed to being right, resistant to feedback, unwilling to examine their patterns, or expecting transformation without doing the work.

Growth requires humility. Confidence requires practice.

She did that!!!

And I could not be more proud.

Sometimes accountability feels harsh in the moment, but later we realize it was protection, preparation, and love in a form we did not understand yet.

In an upcoming Bridge to U conversation, my guest Keith Scott shared a powerful turning point: his mother took away the car and apartment she had provided because he was not appreciating the opportunity or staying focused.

That moment did not break him. It redirected him.

The pipeline isn’t broken. It has been underbuilt.

For 21 years, Morehouse Innovation and Entrepreneurship center has been investing in Black men, entrepreneurship, leadership, and the kind of ecosystem-building that prepares talent for the future.

This clip is a reminder that empowerment cannot be episodic.

It has to be intentional.
It has to be sustained.
It has to be connected to real opportunities, real relationships, real capital, and real development.

When we talk about the “pipeline challenge,” we also have to ask:

Who has been building the pipeline?
Who has been investing before the spotlight?
Who understands that entrepreneurship is not just about starting businesses, but about building confidence, agency, innovation, and economic power?

This is what the future of work, leadership, and entrepreneurship requires: ecosystems that see Black men as builders, innovators, owners, and leaders.

Morehouse Innovation ans Entrepreneurship center is a powerful example of what happens when vision meets consistency.
