Why niche is the new reach in 2025 ✨

Brands are increasingly favouring creators who demonstrate authentic connections with targeted communities, not just those with the largest audiences.

Niche = focused engagement = reach.

The data speaks: Nano-influencers achieved 1.73% engagement in 2024 vs 0.61% for macro-influencers¹. This heightened engagement translates to greater algorithmic reach, as platforms prioritise meaningful interaction over passive consumption.

Why? Because niche communities convert. They save, share, comment meaningfully, and stick around when algorithms shift.

Positioning is everything: The creator positioning themselves as “your beauty bestie” competes with millions. The creator positioning themselves as “clean beauty derm for acne-prone skin” plays in a much smaller, more valuable competitive landscape.

For creators, this requires understanding:

1. Positioning: Who is your target audience?
2. The Offer: What value are you providing?
3. Credibility: What expertise can you leverage to establish authority?

This targeted approach ensures your content reaches deeper into your community while boosting discoverability among similar audiences.

The creators thriving in 2025 aren’t trying to be everything to everyone. They’re delivering specific value to precisely defined audiences, building engaged communities that make them the perfect fit for brands seeking authentic connections with their target markets.

Less is more.

A run down on what Instagram's latest algorithm changes mean for you 👇

1. A new approach to ranking for Reels. Previously, content was ranked primarily based on how an account’s followers engaged with them (which meant that accounts with the largest audiences often saw the most reach). Now, all creators have an equal chance of being recommended by the platform - much like how TikTok's algorithm works.

✨ What this means for you:
- Smaller accounts now have a greater chance of being discovered. Every post has the potential to go 'viral'.
- When reviewing creator profiles for partnerships, brands will have to place a bigger emphasis on per-post reach and engagement, vs audience size during the review stage.
- Creators will be judged on their potential to be discovered, based on historical Reels performance.

2. Rewarding original content. When two or more identical pieces of content are found, IG will only recommend the original one. Additionally, when a piece of reposted content is found, IG will add a label linking to the original creator, which will be visible to followers of the account reposting it.

✨ What this means for you:
- Who posts first matters in branded partnerships; leveraging IG's branded content collaboration feature is an easy way to navigate this change. Side note: this is a point of differentiation for IG, and it will be interesting to see if TT adopts this feature in the future.
- Brands will have to significantly alter influencer-supplied content before reposting, otherwise influencers and content creators should consider creating two separate assets when partnering with brands; one for the brand, one for their own audience.

3. Removal of aggregators from recommendations. Accounts that repeatedly (10+ times in the last 30 days) post content from other Instagram users that they didn’t create or enhance significantly will not be recommended.

✨ What this means for you:
- Brands can no longer simply repurpose or repost existing content, whether created through influencer partnerships or by customers.
- UGC content creators will become even more relevant to help supplement original content creation for brands. by @clectiv.co

Did you know!? According to TRG Datacentres’ analysis*, the most deleted app of 2023 globally was Instagram 🤯 Monthly searches for “how to delete (my) ___ account” soared past the 1 million mark in 2023 for Instagram, a figure significantly higher than second-placed Snapchat (128.5K monthly searches), and third-placed Twitter/X (123K monthly searches).

So, what does this all mean?

Just because people have the desire to delete Instagram, doesn’t mean usership is actually on the decline — in fact Instagram’s monthly active users continues to grow and is predicted to reach 2.4B by the end of 2024. In Australia, Instagram was the tenth most downloaded free app on the App Store** (TikTok ranked higher at #6).

But, what it does indicate is the changing sentiment towards Instagram. Users continue to cite concerns over privacy, data collection and impacts on mental health - as well as overall fatigue and an over-saturation of advertising - as reasons to take a break.

Our prediction is that standard users (i.e non content creators) of the app will shift to using Instagram as a place to consume content vs share content — and will retreat to DMs or other messaging apps to stay connected with family and friends. This also means users will become increasingly selective over who they choose to follow.

One thing is for sure though, with data indicators like these, Instagram will be pulling out all the stops to ensure creators remain invested in the platform.

Our recommendation for content creators is to continue to prioritise quality over quantity, authenticity over trends, and originality over virality.
