Everyone say hey to Elizabeth Perkins, a third-year Chinese and international business major with a political science minor from Charleston, South Carolina! šŸ‘‹

Why did you choose Clemson?
Moving around a lot as a kid and even spending six years of my childhood in South Korea and Japan, finding somewhere that truly felt like home in a college was very important to me. After touring Clemson for the first time and meeting the people that would go on to become some of my best friends and mentors, I knew I had found my community. The people and culture of welcome here is unlike anywhere I have ever been and I am incredibly grateful to have been accepted with such open arms. In just three years, Clemson has become my second family and my home away from home.

What is your advice to Clemson students?
My advice to Clemson students is to take a step back when things get busy and recognize how far you have come. As college students, it is incredibly easy to get wrapped up in a packed schedule filled with multiple commitments and responsibilities. However, the memories you cherish most when you look back on your time at Clemson will often be the little moments like spending time with the people who make Clemson feel like home or pausing to watch the sunset over the Blue Ridge Mountains. Oftentimes, as students, we are too critical of ourselves. We grow so much in such a short period of time at college, so it is important to take a moment to congratulate yourself and be content with who you are before immediately moving on to the next thing.

Congratulations to Clemson's most recent Student of the Game, Briggs Murray! Briggs was nominated by not one, not two, but three academic colleges for this recognition! 🄳

An Honors double major in Political Science and Modern Languages, Briggs is an integral part of our campus community. He's a National Scholar, Dixon Global Policy Scholar, Lead Writing Fellow at Clemson's Writing Lab, Editor-in-Chief of The Pendulum, Vice President of Every Campus a Refuge, and member of the CBSHS Student Advisory Board Social Media Committee.

Off-campus, Briggs has spent his summers living and learning in the emerging economies he hopes to serve in the future through a career in public service. As the University's first Boren Scholar since 2018, Briggs studied French in Dakar, Senegal at the West African Research Center. As a Critical Language Scholar, he studied Kiswahili in Arusha, Tanzania.

In all he does, Briggs is a friend and advocate. Way to go, Briggs! 🧔 by @clemsonnsp

Interning at the widely regarded ā€œNo. 1 hospital in the world"? Tulsi Patel did that. 🤩

An Honors philosophy major with a concentration in Medicine, Health and Human Values, Tulsi completed an internship this summer at the Mayo Clinic. Tulsi's program specifically focused on medical ethics, something she learned about firsthand standing in an operating theater watching a patient receive a life-saving kidney transplant.

The intern team also engaged in ethics research, learning from case studies and current Mayo clinicians who tackle ethics questions on a daily basis. by @clemsonnsp

Every year, before classes start, first-year scholars participate in a retreat as a way to welcome them to the NSP, Honors College, and Clemson community!

Throughout the retreat, our first years had the opportunity to bond and make memories through a campus history tour led by Dr. Rhondda Thomas, canoeing, bonfires, stargazing, getting ice cream, lots of fun games, and exploring campus together. We’re so excited to officially welcome them to the NSPham!

A special thank you to retreat team leader Gretchen and the rest of the retreat team, Adam, Briggs, Tulsi, and Carley, for planning such an incredible experience for our first-year scholars. This retreat would not have been possible without their hard work, thoughtfulness, and dedication. We are so grateful for everything they did to make our newest scholars feel at home! by @clemsonnsp

Happy second week of classes, scholars!

Looking back on our first week back on campus!
We welcomed the new school year with the Welcome Back Dinner where scholars all got to reunite after the summer alongside some of our faculty fellows and Dean Winslow. This was followed by the Schedule Swap where scholars came together to compare schedules, share advice, and prepare for the year ahead. Finally, on Friday, Dr. Pyle hosted his own welcome back dinner for all of our scholars where they got a chance to catch up and reflect on their first week of class. We’re so excited for all that’s to come! by @clemsonnsp

SUMMER SPOTLIGHT - Meridee Ritzer

Glück auf! My name is Meridee Ritzer, and I’m a rising junior majoring in Chemistry and double-minoring in Geology and Nuclear Engineering.

To start my summer, I traveled with NSP to Puerto Rico studying the balance between tourism and sustainability. I was lucky enough to hike through El Yunque rainforest, kayak through a bioluminescent bay, snorkel in a coral reef, and explore San Juan!

I was selected as a recipient of the @daad.usa RISE international fellowship, so afterwards I traveled to Freiberg, Germany to conduct research at @tu_bergakademie_freiberg . I am working in the hydrogeology and hydrochemistry department researching the effectiveness of carbon dioxide injections as a means to dissolve carbonate buildup and make aquifer thermal energy storage possible in Southern Germany!

In my free time, I have soaked up German culture, visited tons of major cities, hiked through mountains and national parks, and (hopefully) picked up a little bit of the German language. I have also taken advantage of being in Europe to travel to the Czech Republic, Austria, Slovakia, and Italy!

In addition to this, I was chosen to present my research at an international conference for RISE recipients in Heidelberg, Germany this weekend! Follow along with me as I share my experience presenting, meeting people from all over the world, and exploring Heidelberg! by @clemsonnsp

SUMMER SPOTLIGHT - Elizabeth Perkins

Hi guys! My name is Elizabeth Perkins and I am a rising junior in NSP majoring in Chinese and international business with a minor in political science! This summer, I am studying abroad in Taoyuan, Taiwan through a third-party program and Chung Yuan University’s Huayu Enrichment Scholarship! I’ve had the best time fully immersing myself in the language and culture here! šŸ‡¹šŸ‡¼

I have already been in Taiwan for over a month and have about six weeks left, so time feels like it’s flying by! I’ve grown so much in such a short period of time by getting out of my comfort zone, making new friends, and pushing myself to use my language skills whenever possible. Being here for the whole summer means I am entirely immersed in Chinese, which has allowed me to really push my language skills to the next level!

In my free time, I’ve been traveling all around Taiwan with my program and with friends to see different parts of the island, which has been a total blast! I have enjoyed going on day trips to Taipei, weekend trips to Shifen and Jiufen, and I just got back from a weekend trip to Tainan and visiting the Alishan National Forest! Taiwan is so incredibly beautiful and I definitely hope to return here in the future for work or study!

I am so excited for the second half of my study abroad journey! I hope y’all enjoy my day in the life takeover! šŸ‘‹ by @clemsonnsp

SUMMER SPOTLIGHT - Ava Goff

Hi! My name is Ava and I am a rising junior majoring in Graphic Communications with a minor in History.

To start the summer, I traveled with NSP to Puerto Rico. While enjoying vibrant cities, beaches, and rainforests, I studied the intersection of marketing, tourism, and community preservation. When we returned home, I headed to Charlotte, NC to start my internship.

I’m currently working as a Graphic Design Intern at Tattoo Projects Advertising. Being immersed in such a fast paced agency environment, I’ve designed brand art, billboards, window clings, social media content, and animated assets for a variety of clients. I’ve had the opportunity to pitch campaign directions and take ownership over jobs throughout the entire creative process from pulling inspiration to presenting final designs during our internal review. Along the way I have worked with amazing creatives and I’ve developed confidence that has helped me stand out as the agency’s youngest designer!

Outside of work, I’ve explored Uptown Charlotte, attending baseball games, going to trivia with my roommate, exploring the Mint Museum. On the weekends, I drive home to see my family and spend time at the beach!

I’m so excited to take you on a day in my life! by @clemsonnsp

SUMMER SPOTLIGHT - Briggs Murray

Hi y’all!!Ā Ā My name is Briggs, and I’m a rising senior double-majoring in Political Science and French, with minors in History and East Asian Studies.

I kicked off my summer by traveling with NSP to Puerto Rico for a pleasant ā€œMaymesterā€ experience, which was as fun as it was HOT šŸ„µā˜€ļø.Ā Ā After that heat, I said adios to the caliente and hujambo to the cooler climate of Arusha, Tanzania. #switchupsummer 😜

Here in Arusha, I am intensively and immersively studying Swahili language and culture at @mstcdc as a U.S. Department of State Critical Language Scholar.Ā Ā Since each week is jam-packed with language classes, Tanzanian conversation partners, cultural activities, and local excursions, I have been thrilled by how much I have been able to learn in just three weeks’ time.Ā Ā I am here for another five weeks, and I hope to achieve at least intermediate level by the end of the program!!Ā Ā

After graduation, I aim to work in international diplomacy & development, devoting myself to a career that addresses the root causes of forced migration across the globe.Ā Ā The linguistic and cultural skills that I’m gaining this summer will enable me to work collaboratively and cross-culturally in East Africa.

During my moments of free time, I have enjoyed exploring Tanzania (including by going on safari in Ngorongoro Crater, a UNESCO World Heritage Site!), making Tanzanian friends, hanging out with my cohort, and watching the World Cup with my host family.

Follow along on a day in my life via stories :-)

SUMMER SPOTLIGHT - Adam Gibson

Hi everyone! My name is Adam, and I’m a rising junior studying Data Science with a minor in AI.

This summer, I had the absolute privilege of going on a Maymester to Puerto Rico with some of the other NSP rising juniors and seniors! We had a fantastic time exploring the rainforest, going on adventures, and eating amazing food. It was definitely a great way to kick off the summer before I started dressing corporate every day...

Currently, I’m a Data Science Summer Associate at Navy Federal Credit Union, the world’s largest credit union! Specifically, I’m on the Digital Payment Analytics team within the Savings and Membership division. Every Summer Associate (myself included) spends most of the summer working on a large-scale project that is presented to senior leadership at the end of the internship. One thing I really appreciate is that I’m doing real work that benefits the company and that they invest so much time and effort into their Summer Associates. My project involves querying big data (sometimes over a billion rows of data!) to build models and create dashboards that support business decisions. It’s been a really fun experience, and I’ve learned a ton!

Outside of work, I’m thrilled to be home for the summer! I live in the DC metro area, and it’s been an exciting time to be here with all of the America 250 festivities and the World Cup. We even have a free fan zone on the National Mall where you can watch the matches! I’ve also had the chance to spend a lot of time with friends and family, go on weekend trips, and play some good old-fashioned water basketball at the pool. I’m super pumped for the Fourth of July, and I can’t wait to see what the rest of the summer has in store. It’s already going by way too fast!

Follow along with my day in the life!

GOCAMS,
