Architecture students Micah Grover and Diego Lopez’s project, Modular Lattice-Crete, was developed in the course Hybrid Automation: Designing with Digital Tools and Material Behavior (ARCH 4990/6990 elective, Spring 2025), taught by Lavender Tessmer. Funded by the Pennell Center Teaching Grant, this project combines recycled plastic, 3D printing, and interlocking lattice components. Recycled plastics are used as a partial replacement for aggregate in the concrete mixture. At the same time, modular 3D printed armatures are assembled into various vertical or horizontal configurations, which are then filled with a concrete mixture. The modular lattice structure serves dual functions: it captures the consolidated concrete mixture while providing partial reinforcement, reimagining the standard relationship between reinforcing and formwork. by @clemsonschoolofarchitecture

Dean’s Leadership Academy and Council (DeSLAC) Student Spotlight: Ella RobertsonMeet Ella Robertson , a recent graduate who was an Architecture major with a minor in Communication from Bristol, Tennessee. What inspired her major:Growing up, Ella loved creating art and spending time in creative spaces. As she got older, she realized architecture brought together her passion for artistic expression and her desire to serve people and strengthen communities. “Choosing architecture came at the intersection of artistic creation and giving back to the people and places that have shaped and supported me throughout my life.” Favorite project so far:Ella’s favorite project was Rayshad Dorsey’s Rural Studio, where she and her partner designed a grocery store greenhouse for a food-insecure community on the South Carolina coast. “This project reminded me that architecture doesn’t have to be loud or tall or expensive to change lives and make a functional difference in a community.” Most impactful opportunity:Studying abroad at the Barcelona Architecture Center transformed Ella’s understanding of architectural history, building design and the relationship between people and place. She says living and learning in Barcelona was a once in a lifetime experience that will always stay with her.How Clemson is preparing her:Ella credits the Architecture Career Expo and Clemson’s faculty with preparing her for a successful career. The Career Expo helped her secure a full-time job in her dream city while faculty connected her with practicing architects who provided valuable mentorship and professional insight. Her advice to future Architecture students:“Architecture is a commitment in more ways than one, but the passion for good design you will find in your professors and classmates makes every challenge worth it.” One thing she wants people to know:“If Clemson has taught me anything, it’s that people are inherently good. McMahan School of Architecture staff member Shay Vinson for receiving the Clemson University Distinguished Graduate Student Support Staff Award at the end of the academic year. Through her efforts, Shay supports graduate student research and scholarship by providing exceptional staff support and helping students pursue their passions in their chosen fields at the highest level of education. Earlier this summer, Shay was also recognized by the College of Architecture, Art and Construction with the Dean’s Award for Outstanding Staff of the Year alongside other faculty and staff award recipients. by @clemsonschoolofarchitecture

Tigers WIN the 2026 48-Hour Repack Student Design Competition! 🎉This international competition challenges students to solve real-world packaging problems for industry partners. This year’s design prompt, developed by @cocacola, asked teams to reimagine the fountain beverage experience for the food-delivery era. The teams had 48 hours to develop, prototype and pitch their concept. For their design “A Glassic Taste,” our team from Clemson earned first place and the Sponsor’s Choice Award. Landscape Architecture faculty, Kawthar Alrayyan and graduate research assistant Averi Brice, co-authored a paper published in Land titled “Parkification as Process: Mapping Ripple Effects in Post-Industrial Mill Landscapes.” Their work continues to explore post-industrial landscape transformation and regional greenway development. In the Spring semester, Kawthar was invited to Smith College as a guest lecturer for the Urban Studies lecture series. She spoke to an interdisciplinary audience about disturbed landscapes and how they shape design thinking. As the Spring semester wrapped up, Kawthar was selected to present two accepted abstracts at the Council of Educators in Landscape Architecture (CELA) conference in collaboration with two MLA students. She also has an accepted abstract for the Environmental Design Research Association (EDRA) conference in May, further highlighting the reach and impact of her research in landscape architecture and environmental design. by @clemsonschoolofarchitecture

Architecture students Maryann Royster, Ryan Herron and Christian Bravo’s project, Co-Co Crete, was developed in the course Hybrid Automation: Designing with Digital Tools and Material Behavior (ARCH 4990/6990 elective, Spring 2025), taught by Lavender Tessmer. Funded by the Pennell Center Teaching Grant, this project prioritizes bio-based materials in raw ingredients, formwork assembly, and the creation of highly textured forms. The concrete mix maximizes the content of bio-based ingredients, including fine and coarse aggregates, admixtures, and reinforcing fibers. The combination of soft and rigid formwork enables geometric repeatability of units while introducing buckling, gathering, and pleating on their exterior faces, which can serve as a catchment for soil and promote plant growth. by @clemsonschoolofarchitecture

Last weekend, recent graduates Jackson Dent, Thompson Teasdale, and Samantha Threlkeld traveled alongside rising second-year students Jayne Flynn and Ashley Dever to Walla Walla, Washington, for the annual Vernacular Architecture Forum Conference!The group explored neighboring communities, rural landscapes, and historic sites through two full-day tours while connecting with fellow preservationists, architects, and researchers from around the country.
