We’ve all said it. 😂

Second shot into a par 5.

You’re still a long way out. There’s trouble around the green. The percentage play is obvious:

Lay up.
Leave yourself a good wedge number.
Give yourself a proper chance at par — maybe birdie.

But then you look at the green.

Look at the club in your hand.

And say the four most dangerous words in amateur golf:

“I can get there.”

Ten seconds later you’re somewhere you definitely weren’t planning to be.

The funny thing about golf is that sometimes the shot that could save you one stroke ends up costing you two.

Knowing what you can hit and knowing what you should hit are two very different things.

That’s the game between shots.

Before Rory ever moves the club, there’s a conversation happening.

That’s what I love about watching Tour players up close. So much of what makes them exceptional happens when they aren’t actually hitting a golf ball.

And there’s a lesson in that for the rest of us.

We spend hours trying to improve our swing.

But you don’t always need a better swing to shoot a better score.

Sometimes you need to make a better decision with the swing you’ve already got.
