TW: Medical Negligence

Yesterday, Adriana Smith’s body delivered her son. Born 1lb 6oz, after being declared with brain death due to an undiagnosed, untreated, stroke.

Adriana Smith went to the ER in February at 9 weeks pregnant, complaining of severe headaches. Physicians presumed it to be pregnancy related, and refused to get her a CT. They sent her home.

Due to this, the stroke killed her.

Due to Georgia’s Heartbeat Law, she was unable to properly be removed from life support because the fetus was 9 weeks. Non-viable.

This resulted in the hospital keeping Adriana’s body artificially alive via life support. This was done against the families wishes.

The danger of this, is they if Chance survives premature infancy, there’s strong possibilities he will require interventions, medical assistance, or have other disabilities. Chance was forced into this world by legislators, and they’re expecting the family to foot the bill.

If, by some magical means, Chance grows up perfectly “healthy”, then this will be used as ammunition for Republicans to further push the forced birth movement. “If we can keep the pregnant person alive via life support, then the baby can still be born!” - probably some legislator somewhere.

The #1 cause of death of pregnant individuals is domestic violence, which a majority of the perpetrators being intimate partners.

If you think of worst case scenario; intimate partner violently attacks pregnant person, they are taken to the hospital for care, but since they’re 13 weeks the pregnancy must continue. Patient kept alive via life support, being used as an incubator for a baby who didn’t chose to be born either. Family is footed with the bill.

And for the attacker? Well, maybe they’re only charged with 1 charge of manslaughter and not 2 because the fetus is alive.

Fight for your rights. Be safe. Drink water. Be the change.
