Voices from the Climate Crisis 🌎

Hosted by veteran environmental journalist Betsy Rosenberg, Code Green is an independent interview series bringing together the scientists, activists, journalists, policymakers, and changemakers on the front lines of our planet's most urgent environmental crises and the political forces shaping our collective response.

At a time when climate change, biodiversity loss, pollution, environmental injustice, and public health threats are colliding with an increasingly polarized political landscape, Code Green amplifies the voices of those working toward solutions.

This reel features clips from just half of the full interviews — with NASA scientist Peter Kalmus, marine biologist Juli Berwald, climate journalist Sammy Roth, communications strategist David Fenton, and many more.

💬 "Climate change is a health emergency." — Laura Bender, American Lung Association

💬 "You can't clean up climate change. What we don't prevent, we are stuck with for hundreds of years." — Joe Romm, Climate Expert

💬 "Every journalist needs to make it their responsibility to be a climate journalist." — Sammy Roth, Climate Journalist

💬 "In our pockets, we hold the two most powerful tools to make change: our smartphone and our wallet." — David Guggenheim, Professor & Marine Scientist (aka Dr. Ocean)

💬 "If you wanna know an environmental justice story, you gotta know somebody that's poor or vulnerable." — Evlondo Cooper, Media Matters

In order of appearance:
Peter Kalmus • Joe Romm • Sammy Roth • David Fenton • Julian Reyes • Randy Hayes • Juli Berwald • Jennifer Bonilla • Laura Bender • Evlondo Cooper • Emily Donovan • Hunter Lovins • Buzz Smith • David Guggenheim • Heather Fipps • Latifah Nansubuga • Penny Kreitzer • Ken Cook

Yesterday, Monday, June 8, was my last day doing climate science for NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, after 15 years of service. I’ve been a remote worker in North Carolina since the summer of 2022, and I was forced to resign due to a mandate to return to in-person work.

I don’t have another job lined up. Instead, I’m hoping to focus on my writing much more, and I’m planning to continue doing heat science work as a freelancer. I’m nervous about losing my salary for my family, but I haven’t felt this free in a long time, and I’m excited about what I can do now. I’m already well on my way with a new writing project (fiction for a change, and I’m having a blast!). Also, both my sons will be at UNC with in-state tuition in the fall, and we’ve already saved for that. I think it will work out. by @climatehuman

NASA scientist “willing to die” for democracy and climate!

In this powerful and urgent conversation, climate scientist and activist Peter Kalmus joins me to explore the deep connection between the climate crisis and the political divisiveness in the United States.

As a NASA scientist, Peter has been sounding the alarm on global warming, rising emissions, and sea level rise—but in this interview, he shares why he’s just as alarmed by the rise of fascism as he is by the increase in carbon emissions.

We talk candidly about how environmentalism is being challenged by misinformation, greenwashing, and political inertia—and why now, more than ever, we must step up, speak out, and refuse to stay silent. We also confront a hard truth: the mainstream media is failing us.

Despite worsening wildfires, deforestation, melting glaciers, and ecosystem collapse, climate coverage remains shockingly inadequate, often buried beneath distractions or sanitized through corporate filters. This silence is not just negligent—it’s dangerous.

The media’s failure to sound the alarm is costing us time we no longer have. Stressing the importance of supporting independent green media, this episode connects the dots between science, activism, and action in a time of urgency.

How do you go from being one of the most prominent climate scientists in the country to being threatened with felony domestic terrorism charges? Meet two scientists – @climatehuman and @ultracricket – who decided if they wanted to make a real difference, they needed to get out of the lab and onto the streets.

#AGU2024 - “Climate Science and Big Oil Need to Go Their Separate Ways”

NASA Earth Scientist and fellow SR rebel Dr. Peter Kalmus ( @climatehuman ) wrote an opinion piece this week on the fundamental importance of The American Geophysical Union (AGU) cutting ties with the fossil fuel industry. AGU has a long history of taking fossil fuel money, and has not pledge a stop to it.

“The AGU’s cowardly compliance with the wealthy industry that’s knowingly destroying our planet is representative of most institutions and individuals around the world, and it’s a key reason why humanity is failing so badly to stop climate change.”

🚫✈️Listen to the words of @climatehuman last year in the campaign together with @staygroundednet . We are taking direct action because the flying industry is one of the symbols of carbon inequality, with emissions still rising while 80% of the global population has never flown. by @climatehuman
