(苦盡甘來) Growing in Midlife: buck as I heal with my #K408 community.

I had a very tough year last year.

I was 53 and it was a year full of turmoils, relational problems and honestly much suffering. It was also the year where a couple of my videos went viral and I strangely found comfort in strangers instead of those at home. Many of the community were willing to be there for me but I was busy learning how to regulate my emotions and manage my personal life. I was in a world of hurts and I started to shrink back, sometimes isolating myself. I also took the time to reflect, press into growth and learned to heal. It was such a confusing time for me. Looking back now and stepping back a bit, I realize this stage of my life as a woman poses much deeper challenges than I had anticipated.

If last year was me starting my recovery,
then this year is where I start to see the fruit of my hard work in healing.

I had a chance to do a video together with my community, thanks to Bulleth3ad for organizing and coming up with the ideas with Peter the videographer (tagged below)— we got to document a bit of ourselves dancing together. It was a fun lil project and gave me the opportunity to dive back into the company of those I missed. I found myself grateful again and a joy started to bloom.

So when I got the footage, I felt really touched going through everyone’s clips. I found myself smiling so big seeing myself dancing amongst friends. It’s good for a heart to feel free again.

Top 4 semi-final round (1 of 3) from last weekend @the.cave.dance.studio pop-up all-styles battle. This dancer came from Arizona and was just trying to catch a battle before he goes home. We really had fun. Bro is a real cool guy. Grateful for the exchange. This may have been my favorite round.

This is what gave me courage when I started at 44 even though it felt late and I felt old amongst the lovely young dancers. Because once I got a taste of it — both popping and krump — there was nothing quite like dancing freely that could keep me in the present moment while letting me explore on so many levels. I’m turning 53 very soon. I hope I get to dance much much longer… because it is truly such a gift and a blessing to me.

#krumpat56 I gotta stay grateful … sometimes it’s just barely maintaining… at this stage trying to stay in krump in midlife at 56, I have (may be) put a bit too much on my plate in life, so when I get to dance, it’s super rewarding. Most grateful to the Bay Area Krump community(k408, fremont krump and baybvck)who is always welcoming and encouraging to me when I get to drop in… they *see* me for my love of this dance and the culture and are supportive of me in whatever capacity i manage to have. Their support also helps me to continue to “get over myself” so I can keep nurturing my growth mindset no matter where I am in my development. ✨🫶🙏✨

And… I want to connect with those who started learning Krump later in life — after 40…. krumpers in their late 40s and 50s or 60s etc. I want to connect with you…

I’m noticing there are more krumpers in their 50s….some really inspiring clips here and there and I try to follow… perhaps my attempt to stay inspired. I know a few .. but can you let me know who they are — send me their tags in DM or comment or what not. I wanna compile a list. 😆🙏🙏 or if it’s you, please say hello!

🫶🇨🇦 time to head back to the bay. Quebec City and Montreal—you have been kind to me with such nice weather and holiday celebration. Quebec City is a beautiful place and I’m glad I got to spend time with my bro Mark and his family just a little bit before all the work stuff. Then took the 3-hr train down to Montreal to spend an extra day there so I can get a direct flight back to SFO.

Super wonderful to see @7starr_vzn @cha.g14 @khad_i_jah in such a short notice in Montreal. They have shown me a lot of love and now I have made a little extra room in my heart for Montreal.

Every great commission starts with a story.
I’m honored to be the artist selected for the Sam McDonald Park poster project commissioned by @smcpfoundation

And I just picked up Sam’s autobiography (it’s out of print) from @recyclebookstore in San Jose. Lucky to have this book available right next to my @TheAlamedaArtWorks studio!! I only started a few pages and am already captured by his spirit. I can’t wait to share more of my research process.
