October is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month. It is estimated that around one in five pregnancies result in miscarriages and losses (Mayo Clinic). Although this data proves that the experience of miscarriage is surprisingly common, people seldom speak or share about this type of grief. In turn, pregnancy and infant loss can feel isolating and confusing.

Check out these suggestions on what to say and how to support your loved one. October 15th is recognized as Pregnancy & Infant Loss Day of Remembrance.

National Hispanic Heritage Month is September 15-October 15.

Clinica is proud to have a rich history rooted in Hispanic heritage. In 1977, Clinica Campesina Rural Health Services was founded by Alicia Sanchez - a single mother of seven and a beloved leader in Lafayette community. Commonly called "La Medica" or "La Madre," Alicia worked alongside hundreds of Spanish-speaking migrant farmworkers who were the heart of Boulder County’s agricultural economy. Today, we continue to honor this history by serving our community, providing services in both English and Spanish, and making healthcare more accessible for everyone.

🕸️🕷️ Welcome to the Health Myth Cemetery! Today we lay these health myths to rest.

Myth: You should stop flossing if your gums bleed.

Fact: Bleeding gums may indicate gum disease. Instead of avoiding flossing, continue to floss every day and your gums will strengthen. Consult your oral and dental health team for proper form. Getting a dental cleaning twice a year is a great place to start on your healthy smile journey!

Myth: You have to relive your trauma to truly heal from it.

Fact: Some individuals don't need to go over their trauma to process and heal. Creating a happy, fulfilling life looks different for everyone, and your therapist will work with you towards your goals.

Myth: If you don't have a family history of cancer, you can skip your cancer screenings.

Fact: Research suggests that your environment and lifestyle have a larger factor in cancer development than genetics. Whether you have a family history or not, don't skip your cancer screenings.

Myth: If you're not overweight, you don't have to worry about developing diabetes.

Fact: While weight can be a risk factor of developing type 2 diabetes, other factors such as your lifestyle, diet, and family history play a role in how your body uses insulin.

Myth: As soon as you feel better, you can stop taking your medication.

Fact: Some medication requires you to finish the complete dosage, like antibiotics. Others are helping you feel better and require tapering so your body can appropriately adjust. Talk to your doctor if you have questions about your medication.

This week marks a historic investment for rural healthcare in Colorado. Our rural communities often lack significant healthcare opportunities and services. Clinica is working hard to meet this need as Gilpin County's only primary care clinic since 2022. Prior to that, the county did not have a primary care physician at all.

The good news: Colorado is distributing $170 million in federal funding to 91 organizations serving rural communities, including Clinica. This investment will help expand access to high-quality, affordable healthcare and support the health of communities that have long faced barriers to care.

Simon Smith, the CEO of Clinica Family Health and Wellness, shared, “There's no dental or oral health services here. There's no pharmacy here. There's very limited behavioral healthcare services here... with this grant, Clinica will look to build upon the success of the past four years, seeking to ensure a sustainable healthcare resource in Gilpin County for years to come.”
