I’m proud to share that my debut book “Assembling a Black Counter Culture” is out today @primaryinfo [link in bio] and available in the UK/EU @antennebooks. The book presents a comprehensive account of techno with a focus on the history of Black experiences in industrialized labor systems—repositioning the genre as a unique form of Black musical and cultural production.

On August 5th at 7pm, I will present a lecture and performance for the opening of @gi_newyork’s #technoworlds @knockdowncenter that explains the premise of the book while reimagining techno beyond the dancefloor as a timeline for technologies of Black exodus and a myth-scientific world system, spanning 1582 to 2100. by @clinicalpoetics

Rest In Peace, grandad…

So much of what I do was inspired by the stories he would tell me, and the adventures we would go on. When I was young, he nicknamed me “professor” after his friend and bandleader John T. “Fess” Whatley, “the maker of musicians.” Now that he’s gone, I’m left with his stories; the blues, jazz, and soul music that he shared with me; and, the memories of our road-trips between Black enclaves in the Deep South and Midwest…

Our THE LAST ANGEL OF HISTORY VIFF Live has it all.

On October 2, join us in our VIFF Cinema for music, conversation, and film. The night begins with a live performance from Speaker Music, the music alias of DeForrest Brown Jr., whose improvisational performances and recorded works sculpt memory and sonic form into a multi-textural rhythmic body.

Following this music, a 30th anniversary screening of THE LAST ANGEL OF HISTORY (1996), which traces the musical legacy of Afrofuturism from its rhythmic origins during the Transatlantic Slave Trade through the imaginary ’future’ worlds conjured in techno and jungle music. Created by the visionary Black Audio Film Collective and directed by John Akomfrah, it examines the intersection between Pan-African culture, science fact, and science fiction.

The event will conclude with a conversation featuring acclaimed interdisciplinary artists, writers, and theorists Kodwo Eshun and Anjalika Sagar, founders of UK artist collective The Otolith Group, in conversation with Brown Jr.

This event is co-presented by the Vancouver Art Gallery (@vanartgallery).

In his first piece for the co-op, DeForrest Brown Jr. (@clinicalpoetics) applies R. Murray Schafer's concept of 'schizophonia' (the separation of sound from its source) to streaming audio, examining how these same systems managing music consumption now fuel the dual-use “defense” economy.

(LA) Deluge presents Nocturne at the Hammer Museum, staged in conjunction with the museum’s exhibition of Arthur Jafa: The White Album. Joy Guidry, Speaker Music (DeForrest Brown Jr.), and Alima Lee perform live, taking up the questions Jafa’s film raises about visibility, legibility, and refusal.

Through sound, space, light, and atmosphere, the program dissolves the boundary between performer and audience, the seen and unseen.

Saturday August 15. 7:30pm. Free with RSVP at the link in bio.

In their visionary essay, written in the early days of Covid, DeForrest Brown, Jr. and Ting Ding explore the strange world of platform capitalism: from lo-fi beats that soothe frayed nerves and boost productivity, to the pervasive sense of apathy and overwhelm that permeates online life up to this day.

Originally featured in the (sold-out) Sonic Acts Academy 2020 magazine, the text is now available for free on the Sonic Acts Substack.

DeForrest Brown, Jr. is a theorist, curator, musician (performing as Speaker Music), and author of the book ‘Assembling a Black Counter Culture’. Ting Ding is a visual designer, data analyst, and co-founder of HECHA / 做.

Jest autorem książki Assembling a Black Counter Culture (Primary Information, 2022), współkuratorował wystawę HOPE w Museion Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art w Bolzano oraz prezentował swoje prace m.in. na Biennale Musica w Wenecji, Rewire Festival i Somerset House. Prowadził również wykłady i zajęcia na uczelniach, takich jak Harvard University, Princeton University, Simon Fraser University oraz School for Poetic Computation.

For a feature in @musicworksmag, back in the fall, DeForrest Brown, Jr. (@clinicalpoetics) and I connected for an interview about his practice, ‘Assembling a Black Counter Culture’ — his 2022 book unpacking the material conditions that produced techno and the mythology it created as a response — and the path that led him to becoming an “Ex-American” living in Vancouver.

Today news arrived that ‘Synoptic Audio,’ DeForrest’s final album under the Speaker Music moniker would arrive July 10 via @planet.mu . Feels like a good time to tease that story, available in the current issue of Musicworks, which includes a CD premiering album track “Sense-Datum Volumetrics.” by @clinicalpoetics

Closing out Assembly, DeForrest Brown, Jr. (@clinicalpoetics) returns after his March 2025 residency at Somerset House Studios to present a newly commissioned performance, Synoptic Audio, exploring rhythm, spatial sound, and recording to reflect on cultural perception, the music industry’s political economy, and the platforms shaping how music circulates.

For Assembly, the work unfolds through systems Brown has developed to generate unique, iterative performances, with recordings captured, edited, and recombined in real time. The result is a live, improvisatory exploration of how music is made and experienced, offering new ways to listen and think about sound.

Ahead of the performance, Brown joins @mathisontrevor, @a.j_boakye_yiadom, and @ain.bailey for a Black Industrial Research Group (BIRG) panel, examining experimental sound as both material and concept through the lens of Black industrial aesthetics. Link in bio for more.
